How the fuck did that trash fire get a sequel?

Are standards no longer a thing?
..J/K I know they aren't.

I think DC is just desperate for a hit, and what options do they have?
Gunn has a successful and even somewhat spectacular track record for the genre, with the two GotG's and an exec prod of Avengers 4.

I assume Aquaman will do okay coming up. James Wan will bring in solid money for them, even if it's just fast and furious under the sea.

The thing is, I just thought I saw something about the SS2 screenplay being finished a month ago... but that was before the director bailed and before Gunn was involved. Maybe the script is being ditched too if they are getting Gunn on board.

Its sad because I really like DCs television shows, they do long arcs much better than movies...

DC has a really cool roster of heroes and villains, IMO better, more interesting, more colorful than Marvel's, so it's kind of depressing to see the powers-that-be just trying to copy and paste the MCU formula. Such wasted potential.

They just don't seem to have anyone who knows what to do with the properties anymore.

I've been pretty hard on Snyder. I guess at least he had a vision even if it was too dark in some ways and not deep enough, since most of the other stuff they do ends up being total shite. I didn't like the final Nolan Batman film but at least he had his own take on things + consistent tone.

Studios just seem to be terrified to take chances and end up helicoptering the whole affair halfway through, leading to a real mess of story and tone. This has been happening with Disney properties too, sometimes it works out and sometimes it ruins whatever good there was in the film.

Their new Shazam movie looks like a more light-hearted spin. When I saw Zach Levi at Baltimore Comic*Con at end of Sept, he said he actually passed on the movie lead tryout (he figured they were going for big buff guys, even though he was approached cold on it)... then went back a few months later to audition for a supporting role that opened up and they were like, "uh, do you want the lead? you're exactly what we're looking for." I've heard the film described as a cross between Tom Hanks' "Big" and a superhero film probably more in tone with light-hearted Iron Man and from the promos that seems to be true.

What would be pretty cool for high-end TV would be a "Legion of Superheroes" involving either Darkseid returning (something the movies have kinda screwed the pooch with) or something involving the Time Trapper /Glorith arcs. But taken more seriously, over the long term, rather than crammed into a 100-minute film that is poorly written.

The new director might be able to save it.

Guardians of the Galaxy 3: James Gunn reinstated as director | EW.com

This is sad, funny, encouraging, annoying.

They made a dumb decision, doubled down on said decision, no other director wanted in, and others starting snapping Gunn up, they were left holding the bag of the formerly successful franchise they hamstrung. So now they're folding, but hes doing SS2 first.

And Gunn isn't a different person than from when he got fired. Nothing changed... except Disney realized they had shot themselves in the head and potentially lost an 800 million movie.

I thought that was pretty dumb when he got fired. Like Disney previously had issues working with people before who made off-color jokes. If they really were serious about that, most of their animated 90's output would look very different. No Robin Williams, Jason Alexander, or Eddie Murphy.

Jared Leto's Joker isn't THAT bad. He's just so unique from the others that it pisses a lot of fans off. But I think something unique is more than refreshing. People just don't like change.

I was fine with Leto. I thought it's just everyone loved ledger's so much and it was a more gangsta version rather that traditional.

I mean, dear God, it's not like Rhino or Steppenwolf or some character that's never in film who we'll see once. We'll see a lot of Joker renditions over time. If one isn't appealing, dont worry.... there will soon be another.

Part of it's the day and age we live in, part of it is Disney overreacting and then refusing to reasonably work through it until they realized how much money they'd lose while pretending it was all about ethics.

I think they expected losses over Gunn staying, and they were completely wrong....they were gonna lose a lot more by firing him. Gunn's hiring by DC, rather than getting DC bad press, was receiving universal praise.

The only thing that would exonerate them a bit would be if it were the act of someone who held authority over this, and now that person got sacked or reorg'ed, and everyone disagreed, so now the new person immediately rolled it back. So it would have initially been more of a personal rogue wolf decision that is now getting expunged.

Apparently Will Smith isn't coming back for this film (just to be called "The Suicide Squad") but they're retiring Deadshot out of respect and in case he comes back for a later film -- so Idris Elba will be playing some other character as yet I haven't heard.

I'd buy that book if it came out, that's for sure...

...both the James Gunn debacle as well as the career of Zack Snyder. (I know, Snyder wasn't the Suicide Squad guy; but it's a similar directing drama considering the controversies surrounding Superman films + the production of Justice League.) I have a love/hate relationship with Snyder, I actually seem to enjoy his films more than most people do (I think it's because he really captures the visual spectacle as well as the darker undercurrents that often have been ignored in superhero films) but he also manages to fall short in some way with each film.

I just rewatched BvS: Dawn of Justice, Ultimate Edition. I definitely recommend the UE over the theatrical release, it actually helps the film make a lot more sense even if it's still got some big whiffs in it (like its take on Jimmy Olsen and Lex Luthor, or the attempt to set up later films with the flying bug guys and Batman's vision). He's always done really great fight sequences, at least. I even appreciate the director's cut of Sucker Punch to some degree (the version that, in its failed attempt to be subversive, actually ends up being a bit subversive by the end by accident).
