    Default Type my two roommates

    Hello,

This is my first post here, I made it because I'm curious to find out what type two of my roommates would fall under. Unlike my other roommates they are rather hard to type, I think mainly because the are introverted, I think that in some way they have similar personalities, but not quite. Anyway I'll make up a list of traits they have.

    Roommate 1

    - So again, definitely an introvert
    - Knows a lot about history even though it's not his field of study. Seems obsessed with movies too and just has a lot of interests in general.
    - He looks a bit slow, and always behaves passive, won't initiate much.
    - Likes to do things on his own accord, he tends only to himself mostly, but I also feel like he enjoys being social at times.
    - I think he is one of those smart but lazy guys and so doesn't always do well in school.
    - He is extremely punctual.
    - Has this really dry wit.
    - Doesn't talk much.

With him I struggle the most trying to find out if he is a feeler or not, I think he is very sensitive, but can't express his emotions too well. So for now I have filled in IXXP

    Roommate 2

    - Again, an introvert, but his social life is more out there (he's a boy scout, is part of a fraternity), I think he can only socialise or hold a conversation with people who are either really extraverted or share his interests. The first roommate is slightly better at small talk
    - Might also be one to tend more to himself, and is also a bit passive in a way. Like the first roommates, he'll never initiate to arrange an activity for the members of our student residence.
    - I also think of him as extremely smart, he has a master in physics and now just like the first one is majoring in philosophy.
    - He likes to build stuff for his computer, is quite handy I think, and also has unexpected hobbies, like he rides a motorcycle, not in a million years would I have thought that this guy rides a motorcycle.
    - This also makes him funny, because he can be so unpredictable.
    - Oh, and he likes to show and talk about the stuff he builds.

I kind of thought of him as either an ISTP or an INTP.

    What do you guys think?

It's really hard to go off of a description of a person written by another person.

But from my experience, roommate 2 sounds more like an ISTP. In my experience, ISTPs are more likely to be social and outgoing when there are common interests and activities. I think that comes from Se in a way though I'm no expert. Being good at fixing and building things is a bit stereotypical of an ISTP. But, I know of at least one who is The other person I know who I believe is an ISTP has never demonstrated that, but she seems like the kind of person who would be.

As for roommate 1, I really can't tell. Perhaps an Fi dom? (INFP or ISFP). I feel that Fi emotion can be difficult to express sometimes for Fi users. Especially for males. At least in my culture (I'm from the US), I get the sense that male Fi is often discouraged. Fe males seem to have an easier time blending in, but I get the sense that a lot of people fail to see the value in Fi guys, which makes me really sad, especially for the ones I've befriended (I seem to naturally attract Fi). Also, a lot of interests could be linked to auxiliary Ne. So INFP? Then again the Se of an ISFP could lead to lots of interests. I'm kind of grasping at straws here.

Thanks for the reply! Yea, it's not easy to type someone based of a description. I was thinking of typing the first as an ISFP, I remember talking to him one time during the exams about study methods. And I recall him saying something along the lines of, that he can only really understand something if he can connect it to something that he finds interesting. Or when he can make connections. When you talk with him he often makes those connections, even when I don't understand them, suddenly he starts talking how what I said reminds him of something some philosopher once said. I saw that on another forum where I posted this, someone else suggested INFP. Just find it hard to think of him as a Fi-Dominant type.
As for the second, ISTP kind of fits for him. Just today he fixed our internet connection by installing some type of self made adapter, or at least I think that is what he did . He is an interesting guy, you can't really see it by looking at him, but he has so much going on, he always surprises me.

    No problem.

People don't always seem like their type too. So it could be hard to think of someone as their type in some cases. I know several people who I believe are one type, but I don't think they come across as such on the surface. One of my two best friends from way back is an ESFJ, but she initially struck me as either an ESTJ or an ENTJ when I was doing some deeper reading into typology a few years ago. She can be very blunt, which I feel is something often attributed to Te. She's also a great leader, which is also attributed to Te doms a lot of the times. But, once you get to know her you can see how much she is really driven by Fe in so many areas.

That's another part of it too. Sometimes people appear to be like one type, but they really are not that type. A lot of the time people will only show a certain side to themselves or act in a certain way until you really get to know the person they truly are. If acquaintances and people who don't know me all that well were to try typing me, I'd guarantee a bunch of people would describe me as a judger (mostly because I don't often embody the perceiver stereotype... most of the time... I have my days like today).

Even people we are closer to can mistype us. My parents are both positive that I am an introvert. However, I'm an extrovert if you use cognitive functions. Also, between my parents who are respectively one of the most extroverted extroverts you will ever meet and a rather socially introverted introvert, I'm more similar in social temperament to my ISTP dad than my ESFJ mom. I suppose the term "ambiverted" really suits me. Even for me it was hard to determine whether I was actually an extrovert or an introvert (although a lot of my friends would peg me as an extrovert).

Indeed, I think from the outside this guy looks like an INTP, because he kinds of fits the clichés, but of course I don't know how he thinks, etc. It's the cognitive functions that are important I guess. I'm going settle on INFP for the moment (with my roommate 1). He often plays the devil's advocate, but I don't think he sees it as playing it. It seems to come from a more feeling/empathic side with him. Again thanks for your help! How did you settle on ENFP?

That's how I'll refer to them from now on. They probably wouldn't mind it either.
