Honestly, if you don't know you're Ni first with lightning speed, forget it.

Sad but true.

Also your entire forum image that you could have made anything you like also points to ISTP, even if we consider all 16 types.

Also, have you tried a Socionics test. The system of Socionics is related but different to MBTI. While although it's a different system, knowing your socionics type will be helpful for MBTI typing you.

I would recommend "The Original Socionics Test" at Tests (thought the extended one was a bit of a timewaster).

I just took the Socionics test and my result was ISTj. I struggled to answer S/N questions, as always.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I'm Ti-dom now. By my forum image you mean my username and picture right? I'm a Metal Gear Solid fan, so that could explain it, but I would really like to be in Snake's shoes... If there was such a thing as solo infiltration missions in real life, I would definitely try my best to get in such a position. I consider joining my country's Federal Police special operations unit, but a degree is required, so I guess I'll just focus on completing my Mechanical Engineering degree for now.

It looks like you're on the border between ISTP and INTP, so I think it's just a matter of picking the one you identify more with. Considering you got ISTj (socionics counterpart to ISTP) I would go with your original hunch and type as ISTP. I don't think you need much further analysis and should just go with it.

Happy to have helped you and welcome to the world of typology and growth.

This is my first post! The reason for it is that I want to clarify whether I'm an ISTP or INTJ.Sorry for any English mistakes, it's not my native language:

I've been introduced to MBTI by a friend 2 years ago and have sporadically read about it since, but I can't tell what my cognitive functions are even though I gave a lot of thought to this recently. The only functions I am sure of are Se and Ni, but I don't know in which order, and I'm also sure I'm a thinker and an introvert. The reason I'm so unsure is that I'm either an ISTP with really strong Ni (possibly in a Ti-Ni loop), or an INTJ with strong Se. I'm not sure whether I use Ti or Te. Also not aware enought of my feelings to tell if I use Fi or Fe. I'm often told I should open up, not only because I'm quiet, but also because I don't demonstrate my feelings that well. I rarely demonstrate emotions, only to those very close to me, and I'm very slow to anger, but when I let it out it's in an explosive manner.

I can be very lazy, but I'm not sure if it's because I have no greater objective at the moment. In school, I just studied the day before tests because I didn't need to study much to get good grades, the same goes for homework and projects (I always did them, even if I didn't really want to). The aproaching deadline is what makes me do things, and at the last minute I organize myself as to study in the most effective way possible and cover everything up. Sometimes I didn't even study because some things were just common sense/simple to me. This is one of the reasons I question whether I'm a sensor or not because some intuitives say sensors often don't "get things", but I always do.

Sometimes I can be a risk taker, but I only take calculated risks, because I "just know" if I can pull it of or not. I have been called "a nerd who knows how to play sports" even though I didn't pratice that much, it's just natural to me.I value skillfull peformance and competence, so I can be somewhat competitive.

I think a lot about my future, and I was really disappointed after I discovered Mechanical Engineering is not as practical as I thought it would be.I often think what it would be like to be a Special Forces operative and wonder if I'm suited for such a job.

I can't identify myself with either type's stereotype, the mastermind who wants to conquer the world or the shotgun wielding badass ISTP, even though I would love to have a shotgun (my country's gun laws make it difficult). So, what do you people think?

I would say ISTP based on what you wrote above. I didn't read anything else in the thread

I can't sort out whether I'm ISTP or INTJ.

I'm sure I'm not INTP as when comparing INTJ and INTP on internet, I always find my self in the INTJ side. I don't need clean data and do need others to form my opinion. And they are not the best as to have coherent ideas. And I have a few friend INTP, I don't think we're the same.

But when comparing ISTP or INTJ, there no clear view about whether I'm one or another.

I thought for a while being INTJ and be done with typing me... but some recent reading made me wonder.

I tried to understand the functiong thing Ti Se Ni Fe vs Ni Te Fi Se but so far I don't get it really.

I answered the topic to type so I'm gonna quote it here in case it could help :

Section A: The Basics

If you had an entire day to do whatever you wanted, how would you spend it?

Do you mean a classical day off ? Or a day I can really do whatever I want that is not currently possible? (Time, money, etc).
Anyhow, I would say : paragliding or jumping of a plane.
The best would be to go climbing with my friend. I started climbing indoor a few month ago and I made many friends there but so far I've got the chance to climb outdoor with them.

Describe your ideal day/night in.

With my familly, eating good food, enjoying my sister craziness and my father's passion in whatever he's doing (plane, programming, music (piano or something else), crosswords, etc). Ow and I would cook something. We would play board games and laugh.

Describe your ideal day/night out.

I would say skiing with friends or familly. I love the fun you can get by skiing fast, the shared memories about it, being in a group. That's also trigger a lot of very very good memories when I was younger. The snow crunching, this particular feeling when it's cold and the sky is blue. The end of the day when you're drain out and you enjoy a fondue savoyarde.

List five things you like about yourself.

I like how I connect things in my head. I don't really know how to explain, but I feel that I deal with a lot of information quickly and understand it quickly and know what to do with it. It's like I have a big theory and every piece of information must fit in it ortherwise I have to redefine my theory. With time, I get more and more acurate but also more flexible.
I like the way I can be really childish.
I like the joy I get get from simple thing.
I like being efficent.
I like my seek of being a better person.

List five things you dislike about yourself.

My lazyness. My lack of organization. Being sometimes just clueless about others feeling. On that topic, I feel that I've learned a lot and use my brain to be friendly and I'm quite good at it. I have no shame to talk to people I don't know (wasn't the case when I was younger). And actually, I do that a lot. I feel that we lack social link (idk if that make sense in English...) with others, I want to be part of those who fight against this so I've learn to open up. But it must also linked to me being annoyed things doesn't go as I want things to be. I don't like akwardness so if I have to, I do what it must be done so that everyone (including me) has fun. But if I can do less, I let that to others.

How have others described you? (Please only use examples from people you have a neutral-positive relationship with, whether criticisms or compliments. Criticisms from people who dislike us and compliments from people who are infatuated with us tend not to hold much truth.)
I'm not very aware of what others thinks of me as I care not that much. But I remember one girl who was really different from saying that I seems very snob. I worked on that since.
I have a recent friend saying that I'm very calm, soothing, reassuring because I was able to plan the day but at the same time being fleible and reorganizing the day on the go each time it was needed. I don't feel that laid back. Maybe that's something I've learn idk.

What do you consider your skills?
Smart, can handle crisis, logical.

What motivates you?
I like things that have a purpose. I work in IT BUT in a hospital. First I wanted to be a physician. I could not work for banks. I work for a non profit organization for climate change and we do some non violent action.

Section B: Digging Deeper

What is your general outlook on life/the world?

As occidental we denied other views on life as non rational but there were some truth in it and somewhat helped in a purpose and I see that today we lack of what those old views gave us. So nover judge what someone believes, there some reason to that that you cannot understand. And respect. It's because you don't understand that that's not usefull. As long as it works...
I feel quite pessimitic but I believe that everything is possible if we really want to and I know that what I believe and what everyone believes shape the world so as I want a better world, I try to be optimistic. I also know that we dismiss too easily what is good to focus on the bad. The good is everywhere, where someone holds the door for you. I believe that I have an impact (small tho) on others and that matter so that why I try to be kind to others. I'm helped with my ability to see the good in everyone.

Do you believe you have a purpose in life? If so, what is it?

I talked about it in the previous question !

How do you typically bond with other people? (i.e. slowly or quickly, through what type of activities, etc.)

aah tought question. I can bond quite quickly but the trick is on the long run. I'm not the best to keep friendship. I can remain silent for long and as I child I wasn't mature enough to ask the mail address of a friend who was leaving the country to keep in touch. I was so sad to lost that friendship. That's why I have not many friend that I would say that are very close, and even then, we're not in touch that often. When I was younger I was often isolated bcause I could not fit in the group, I could not understand the group dynamic and was perceived weird. I felt very lonely apart from the school from 6 to 10 years old where I had the same classmate during those years and we were in a very protecting environnement. So friendships are really not easy for me and I really have to control myslef to make those happening.

What do you find yourself thinking about most frequently?

what to do next, how to improve this or that.

What are you most afraid of?

Being alone

What traits do you admire in others?

Smartness but recently what we call emotional intelligence (which I lack)

What traits annoy you in others?

Not being smart and not compensate it in others ways. I enjoy people who aren't smart as long as they bring something valuable : it's often on the social skills level that they're usefull.

What was your childhood like?

I was good at school. I really enjoyed class. Not easy at all with others.

What do you want most for yourself?

Hapiness

What do you want most for others?

Hapiness

Section C: Interests and Values

What are your favorite things to talk about?

Healthcare systems ? I don't know that's the first thing that came out of my mind (that the current topic I could talk to anyone who show a little interest on it). The cultural differences between countries, how everything can be seen differently, how the world works.

What are the five most important things to you?

My familly. Democracy (we're gonna loose it folks!). Health (I'm gloosing it). Food (thank god we have plenty). Hug (everyone doesn't have enough, the world would be better with hugs)

What do you think the world needs more of?

Hugs as I just say. Love basically. Not being afraid of change. That everyone takes part in what he wants to fight against. A massive and mortal plague.

What do you think the world needs less of?

Humans. Luxury. Money.

What is your favorite quote? What significance does it hold for you and why?

The whole movie holy grail. I like absurd, it holds some truth.

PS : English is not my native language

Overall, I’m seeing a lot Fe idealism. INTPs and ISTPs tend to use logic (Ti) while having a subconscious desire to better humanity (Fe). The INTJ would be more concerned about their own goals (Fi). I think the INTJ version of Fe idealism- Fi combined with Ni- would be the INTJ envisioning the ideal world in which everything lines up to their internal values. I can tell the idealism is more Fe than Fi because it focuses on what is good for humanity, not what humanity should do to become fair and just.

Have you tried analyzing your stress reactions? INXJs’ inferior Se makes them seek novelty when under stress. When extremely upset (like right after a temper tantrum), they like to block out sensory stimulation (Se) by doing things such as staying in a dark, quiet room. They also have tertiary Fi which makes them susceptible to sulking, brooding, and ‘dragging out the sadness’ when they enter the ‘cooldown’ phase after a period of extreme stress.

Describe your ideal day/night out

Your answer to this question is full of Se.

As as for that part about connecting knowledge, try this (I read it somewhere else a long time ago):
Read the following statements, do you ‘feel’ a logical incongruency, feel that there is something wrong with it?
The first statement is true.

1. Excessive food left stuck in your teeth after a meal can cause gingivitis. You need to clean it out!

2. You should brush your teeth to get rid of the food! You should brush your teeth once in the morning, once after lunch, and once in the evening after dinner.

What to do next, how to improve this or that

You might think this is Ni, but Ni is more concerned about the far future than what to improve at the moment.

You are definitely an ISTP.

Here’s some evidence you can’t miss:

INTP- I’m not seeing much Ne. It‘s possible, but you have clear Se preference
ISTP- Good fit. The only thing that throws me off is the attachment towards your close people and the strong desire to help humanity, since I don’t identify with that much (I am INTP). I guess that just means you have better developed Fe or I will become like that once I am older, lol.
INTJ- Nope, see no signs of Ni, tertiary Fi or inferior Se
ISTJ- Nope, no inferior Ne or trademark pragmatism
INFP- Nope, they have lots of emotional intelligence
ISFP- Not very possible, ISFP children are very sweet, other children often like their ‘niceness’. Their Se often manifests itself through a love for beauty; beautiful art and music. This is because the auxiliary (2nd) function is a helper who aids the dominant (1st) function. The ISFP’s dominant is Fi which concerns itself with not just morals but values and expresssion of self while the ISTP’s dominant Ti is more concerned with getting stuff to make logical sense.
INFJ- Nope
ISFJ- Nope, they have auxiliary Fe

Note: Introvert or extrovert is generally the easiest to figure out. However, due to your negative social experiences, it is possible that you are just a socially awkward extrovert.

ISTP or INTP:

You prefer:

. Panther or Owl?

. FPS-Stealth Game or MMO-RPG?

. Ideas for action or ideas for theory?

. You are finally more decisive or open?

INTJ or ISTP:

. INTJ plans for strategy, ISTP plans for tactic.

. INTJ is decisive with a little vision of the physical world (big maps and specialists advisers), ISTP is decisive after a clear vision of the physical world. (focus maps and observation of the immediate environnement)

(ISTJ will be decisive only with focus maps)

I like this...but seriously, you should still brush your teeth in the morning even if you don't eat. I still caught onto it (didn't think I did at first), but there's another unspoken factor that can go into this specific example so it still lines up wonderfully with logic. Morning breath.

It would help if it was changed to
"2. You should brush your teeth to get rid of the food! You should brush your teeth once in the morning after breakfast, once in the afternoon, and once in the evening after dinner."

I enjoyed reading your post though, and I agree with your conclusion of ISTP.

Was going to suggest looking into INTP.

First time I ever took an MBTI test (was the shitty hermeneutics one) I typed as INTJ. Then years later I thought I was ISTP quite strongly. Was not until I had it confirmed that I was simply a blend of the two (INTP).

INTP's often have powerful Ni, and until they develop their Ne, they often act a lot like ISTPs.

One hallmark of an INTP is that they often have a ton of pet projects going on all at once, but never really seem to finish any of them. If you identify with this, then you likely are an INTP.

I also might suggest to do a few tests. There are some good one's on this site even. This One pegged me pretty good actually.

I find myself always relating to ISTP in this since I was a child, I know it's not related but I have always understood ISTP's in one way or another , srangely.

I noticed it too, but had a low care factor. A reader wouldn't be dying or even seeing a dentist with issues if they misunderstood it.

I'm not sure it's a good test for Ti either. It's not like all non-Ti types fail to understand logic or to see context. Otherwise only a few MBTI types would ever do well on an IQ test.

MBTI Type
INTJ
I have made this thread in 2015 and only now have I finally discovered my type. I will post the reason why here 5 years later, but maybe it could be worth it to make another post altogether. Let me know if you think that should be the case.

Turns out I was right about considering INTJ. I guess INTJs just have great instincts about things, but can also question them and their conclusions if they don't gather enough data (or feel like they didn't). My interest in MBTI has been like a rollercoaster, and whenever I have felt compelled to read about it again it was out of a sense of unfinished business. This page was even in my favorites during this entire time so that I could go back to it eventually if I found out for sure. I lurked in my own thread every once in a while in search of some insight.

Someone has pointed out how the forum image I've crafted pointed out to ISTP. The thing is I guess I have just always strived to be like them, and fell in the trap of thinking I might have been one because I just admire a lot of ISTP qualities, which is why Snake is one of my favorite characters. Thinking back this might have been caused by Fi valuing a hands on, decisive and no bullshit approach as things to strive towards. I was also living through an uncertain period, lacking a bigger objective since I was questioning my major choice and didn't know what career path I wanted for sure (I've switched to computer science and I'm happier and confident in what I want to do now). The suggestion of INTP always fell flat to me because I've never liked the idea of being one, despite thinking I was a Ti-dom and too nerdy to be an ISTP. I just never believed I had Ne as a function, brainstorming for example is a nightmare to me, I hate it.

How did I finally realize my type? By understanding the "four sides of the mind". I have read about functions a lot since this post, but never delved in this subject until I have watched this video: What Are The Four Sides Of The Mind? by C.S Joseph. I then watched the ISTP one he made since I had decided to stick with that typing for a while, but then I watched his INTJ video and everything clicked. I have always felt that looking at 4 functions alone provides such a limited insight on how a person's mind works. We all use the 8 functions after all. And it turns out I probably derived the notion of being a Ti-dom from being a Ti critic (if you don't know what that means I heavily encourage you to watch one of C.S. Joseph's videos). This function isn't the way I operate, it just drives me to go and gather knowledge through Te. I thought I could be Ti dominant but I have always felt stupid near true Ti-doms, I guess their intelligence is underrated (INTP's maybe not, but ISTP's for sure) and INTJ's overrated.

Now i realize how I pursue things the Ni and Te way (for a long time it was mostly hobbies since I lacked a clear main objective). I'm so good at researching and acquiring usefull info to reach my goals. Had I focused on MBTI a little more I might have realized my type earlier. People often question my knowledge on subjects I enjoy, such as strength training because it's so unrelated to my academic field (now computer science) that they think I couldn't possibly know much about it considering the time I took to study it as a hobby. One example: I have tried explaining many times about things like how most doctors don't understand how strength training works (most people don't, even a lot of personal trainers) and how they give wrong advice on the subject all the time, and people tell me "Yeah, you are full of shit because they are doctors and you are not". I get frustrated, but I do have absolute confidence in the data I've gathered though, I'm under the impression I can cut through the bullshit and find what works. I just think: "Look, I know about this stuff, and I have provided the proof needed to change your mind. I won't major in physical education or medicine to prove you wrong , I'm a programmer!". There's usually a lack of concensus between professionals anyway, people just choose to believe what they want.

One thing that might have made me take this long is that I just don't like the hype surrounding INTJs. Guys, we are not that special, get over yourselves. I believe some people in this thread thought I could have been a wannabe INTJ ("Honestly, if you don't know you're Ni first with lightning speed, forget it"), but the truth is I was a wannabe ISTP all along lol. INTJs are not always on point, but you could say I knew something was off and was never confortable with the ISTP typing.
