ENTP or INTP?

Hi, I'm new here! (And sorry for any mistakes I might make - English isn't my first language.) :hi:
I need some help figuring out the first part of my type. I'm pretty sure it's xNTP, but I can't decide if I'm extroverted or introverted. Especially as ENTPs are supposed to be the most introverted of all extroverts. I used to think of myself as an INTP, but then my friend said the ENTP description suited me very well and now I'm switching back and forth between those two.
I've looked up the cognitive functions and Ne seems to be dominant for me. On test I usually score as an INTP, but the questions usually concern going to parties and socialising with people. I love meeting new people, but only if I consider them to be "smart and interesting enough". I've no interest in small talk and if anybody attempts it, I simply get bored. I have tonnes of new ideas, but I wouldn't say they're very thought-through.
When I spend too much time with people, I feel the need to lock myself up in my room for a couple of hours. But when I spend too much time alone, I feel the need to talk to somebody. I usually act as if I was either five or fifty years old, there's no in-between. I'm extremely sarcastic and if somebody annoys me or makes a fool out of himself, there's a good chance I'll straight out tell him about it. I get bored very quickly and hate routine. Also, I would say that I quite like being the centre of attention, as long as it's me that puts myself in the spotlight.
Please, help - I'm confused :(

Well, first of all, welcome to the forum!

I can say for my sake, if I'm around a group of people for too long, I need to get away and I'll deliberately do it. At the same time, I don't want to be alone for too long either. In a choice between the two, would you feel more at home discussing possibilities and concepts amongst a group of people, or thinking about them by yourself? In a group of people are you one of the loudest or one of the quietest?

It really depends on who are the people in question. If I know them and feel comfortable, I can rant for hours. When I'm with friends, I'm the loudest and I love getting the attention.
If I don't like those people, but I'm forced to be near them (e.g. at school), I'll clam up. Otherwise, I'd end up in a massive argument. My strategy for this is acting as if they weren't there.
And around strangers, I don't really know what to say and feel rather uncomfortable. Although, if they seem to be even shier than me, I kind of start acting as I would with friends.
Right now I'm guessing ENTP, but I'm still not quite sure.

I'm not entirely sure either way, I think it'll take some more examination of how you think. I'd say yes, NTP seems more you but it is a question of whether you have more of a preference for either Ne or Ti more. You can have shy ENTPs and socially confident INTPs. Other people on this forum have asked the same question if you want to read them, but I found this examination interesting from a web search - Q&A: The Difference Between INTP and ENTP | CelebrityTypes

Yeah, I've read it before (more than once) and again just now. And some of the threads too.
Right now I'm thinking ENTP.
When I get a new idea, I usually don't examine it carefully from every angle, because I'd get bored. And I'm not sure if it's a difference between INTP and ENTP, but when I actually get around to doing something, I usually get bored halfway through and start doing something else. I finish maybe 10% of all the things I do.
I guess I'll have to ask somebody if I'm "quick to seize upon new input" etc.. I think I am, but I often have misconceptions about myself.
I honestly think there should be such a thing as introverted ENTP. If that makes any sense

I think an introverted ENTP can make sense, plus there are some people on here who talk about ambiversion, a state between the two. You're not alone.

Hello
I think ENTP would be a safe bet. The more introverted ENTP.
And I've heard of ambiversion. I only wish it was included in MBTI.

Yeah, I feel the same way. I stay inside with my thoughts, and I think a lot of my Ne kicks in with music, gaming, and other media. So I don't actually need other people to be content, even though it's technically an extroverted preference, it only suggests that we interact with the external world, and not necessarily the people who inhabit it.
When I do socialize however, I start off reserved with people I don't know and then if I feel comfortable I let the Ne do its thing and conversation could become endless.

But I've been wondering:
When I'm at best, I love trying new things and saying controversial stuff just for the shock effect. I don't like thinking too much before doing something or making a decision. But sometimes, especially when I'm feeling uneasy, I'd rather stick to the things that are familiar and safe, so to speak. Is that partly the Si kicking in? Or is it something else?
Because I admit I've only got into MBTI recently and it's still rather puzzling.

That could be a good explanation, I'm still learning this stuff myself, too ^.^
I might also suggest that even though it's sort of conventional for you, your Ne may have developed in such a way that you tend to use it to create options which are comortable for you. I don't see why any rational person wouldn't, and I could definitely find instances with myself that fits that.

As a relatively introverted ENTP, I agree with ENTP for you.

You said you related to Ne more than Ti. That's all it requires imo.

I'm in the exact same boat, only with strong feeling preference.

Figure out your dominant cognitive function. And then figure out your 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. Don't think of it as INTP or ENTP think of those things as representations of what MBTI is actually measuring. That is to say the order in which you perceive the world AND what functions you use in different situations to make decisions. If you take that approach and dive deeper into MBTI and what each of the functions represent then you will quickly get to the bottom of who you are.

I test as INTP, ENTP, ENFP, ENFJ, INFP, INFJ yet when I take the approach mentioned above it is CLEAR AS DAY, I'm an ENFP. My dominant function is Ne, my secondary function is Fi and I also have a rather capable Te. Finally my action (4th in line for me) orientation Si is linear actions.

Hi, everyone!
Well, I test as INTP, because I'm not very sociable. When I first looked up cognitive functions, I was convinced my Ti was dominant. But then, a couple of days ago I took the same test with a friend, and Ne came out as my dominant function, which really confused me. But now I think it is.
Thanks for help! :D
