Generally, IQ's cannot be a reliable source of people academic abilities. Determining people's aptitudes based on their accomplishments is much wiser. (ignoring lazy or uninterested bums)

 I calculated how many zeros I could get and still maintain a C average.

IQ and high grades don't directly correspond. I know any number of really incredibly bright people who were B students at best because school bored them to tears, and they couldn't summon the motivation to do the paperwork.

EDIT: I've heard it said that in industry, you often find that the A students are hired by the C students.

142. We had them done in high school as a part of a psychology class (I hated that damn class).

I wish it would translate over into real life.

IQ and "brightness" don't correspond either. When dealing with disabled children, IQ is a fairly good way to identify problems that couldn't have been identified from simple observation, but thinking that it has a hard link to actual intelligence is ridiculous.

I think a better way to gauge intelligence is to see whether or not someone believes IQ tests are a good indicator of intelligence.

Not that I disagree with you but do you have an explanation as to why it would work one way and not the other?

Maths are a more tamed system, I'm simplifying here but, you have everything you need when u do maths, you don't need to have as great of a capacity to connect and make up concepts based on a very wide range of types of information and methods.
Maths are more linear, and you just can't think of everything and include it into a concept in a narrow linear fashion, you're bound to miss alot of elements, or treat your philosophy as an equation where you expect the result before doing the thinking.

This is embarrassingly wrong.

Our parents wouldn't tell us because they didn't want us comparing or something stupid like that. (6 kids blended family) As if we didn't know who were the "smart" kids. And as if the "non smart" kids were worth less because of it. I was in gifted class, whatever that means. :/

My dad thinks he gave me the results in all the papers he's given me but with my enfp organizational habits I can't find it.

I always thought this until I talked to one of the intervention specialists at the school. They told me that the grades and the IQ should line up and if it doesn't that something is wrong and needs to be corrected.

I wish someone would have known that when I was getting C's in middle school.

Determining people's intelligence by their performance, academic or otherwise, is stupid too.

^So what do you think it should be determined by? Their favorite color? There is a place for not over relying on "IQ" but pretending it isn't there isn't a good idea either.

There is no way to exactly determine intelligence.

From what I've seen, IQ tests measure logical-mathematical capabilities.
The problem was that some of the math problems that are in the tests, have already been thought in schools to some. So there's a bias. Also a person who has done math a lot, will do a lot better in a math logical test.

It seems that we have specific activities...in which we get better and better throughout time.
If someone does math for 10 years, everyday, as a kid obviously will score higher, while someone who's really social and goes out all day will score lower in the tests, but the issue is that the one who does math won't handle the social situations as good as the other one.

So the problem is very complex, and it does not yes/no answer, we cannot quantify intelligence.

IQ is a good idea, but the common view on IQ is incorrect.

I have an interesting story to tell you all.

I have a friend, who is quite dumb, he has MAJOR difficulties understanding stuff, he doesn't understand or even know basic things.
And guess what:

Last summer we did a chess championship, and he won.

I played a lot of chess with him, I won once, he won like...20 times. And he has beaten at lot of people at chess, many times, without losing.

And he has an excellent memory, he memorizes stuff with many details, but he doesn't really understand what he memorizes.

My theory is that he memorized a ton of chess moves and strategies.

So he's brilliant in his own way, despite the fact that his abstract thinking is like...inexistent.

Interesting right?

I have a mediocre IQ (I was supposed to struggle w/ college prep classes) but I have a 4.0 college GPA and was placed in advanced classes when I was younger (surprising but true). In many ways, I am really lazy and wait until the last minute to finish my work.

Could it possibly be that your math/logic is just average but you've got higher IQ in other areas?

That could be. I would say coming up with creative connections and original ideas is definitely my forte so in that sense college seems fairly easy.
