... no bar games, you can't leave, and there's nothing to do but small talk.

How do you keep from drinking yourself into oblivion to escape the boredom?

Bars bore me to tears, so I usually just don't go. Maybe go to one where a good band is playing?

Find a cute girl as fast as you can and leave before the evening gets to the point you described above.

Best to leave before 2 AM, or whenever last call is, because that's when the drunk rednecks who didn't get lucky that night will be looking to fight others.

Why can't you leave?

Find the fire alarm and set it off.

Q: Why would you want to avoid that?

IDK ... Meeting people who actually like to hang out in bars maybe isn't what the OP is looking for ;)

I'd go up to random people of interest and chat them up, maybe make some new friends.

Don't small talk, simple.

If you small talk, you'll give others the opportunity to do the same.

If you're honest and speak your mind, you'll give others the opportunity to do the same.

Boredom, small talk, hmm... why you be at the bar in the first place?

I don't believe that "for the hell of it," or whatever because people can do that at home, or at a friends house.

:)

Networking, mostly.

You know how well Ne-fueled speech usually goes over around ESxJs and xSFPs.

I take it that your networking isn't very successful, then?

It's fine, if boring and draining. Older lawyers and judges - awesome. Fellow students and younger lawyers - not really catching on, so to speak.
