Within you churns the vortex

Today cool and crisp
the sun radiates
but doesn't warm
like a smile that is
turned upward
but the emotion
is empty

Today a new day
to start a fresh
a new chapter
in a book that is
being written
but the words
are lost

Today so easily
can escape us all
if for a moment
we disconnect
and forget all
the beauty it
could have in store

Today I'd like to
start over, start again
forget the past
and embrace the
future.... but without
the past I am
not me today

Without the past
there is no growth
we become but
stagnant and stale
for the past shapes
and molds us and
grows us for today

To speak the dread
That wraps its talons

I sit and listen -
Babble aplenty,
Mindless words
With sense, not any.

I wonder why
Some cannot keep

From which words leap.

I write this verse
In acid tone
To dolts that call

I am not slow.

Beneath the veil of self
Lies everything I am,
Everything I was,
Everything I ever will be.

No! Don’t lift my covering!
It's there to keep
My raw nerves from feeling
The breath of kindness.

I am afraid to know
That fleeting touch.
It may soothe,
It may destroy.

I'll sit here covered.
Unknown, unseen, unaware.
Beneath this ebony veil
That keeps out the hurt.

Life is easier
when I put me aside
forget all my worries
and behind someone
else I do hide

I can put on
a mask and drift away
be somewhere else
for just one day

here I can redirect
all my feeling and emotions
I can wrap them in others
give them my devotion

a form of coping
and dealing with such pain
to sever it off and
vow never again

soon enough, though
reality will set in
and eventually I know
I'll have to begin

A deep breath
a releasing sigh
I watch the minutes
slowly tick by

into tomorrow
becoming today
so much in my mind
I want to say

yet words like daggers
pierce the heart
I quiet my lips as
there's nowhere to start

it's all be said you've
heard it before
yet still upon my lips
there's so much more

I struggle to grasp
at the words to say
I put them aside
for one more day

yes another day
they'll still be here
swirling in my mind
awaiting your ear

Now that we've wasted
The whole weekend fighting
Can you look back and say
That our ship is "righting"?

Are you glad you've proved
Your point fully true?
And destroyed any chance
That I'd still love you.

Did it make you feel good
To crush all my hopes,
And trample my feelings
To bolster your ego?

You did it for love,
You did it for us.
What made it right to
Throw me under the bus?

So I slept and I woke
To face this new morn,
Knowing damned well
My heart's full of scorn.

But upon my face
There'll be a big smile.
And once again I'll
Go the extra mile.
