I guess that's an idealistic thing to ask, but that's the way I feel. I think that if everyone were perfect it would all be pretty bland. They've done studies to figure out that the most symmetrical faces are the most beautiful, but I have to say I disagree with science in this case. If you compare the woman with the most symmetrical face (Florence Colgate) to, say, Sasha Grey, I think it's clear who is more beautiful.

Florence:

Sasha:

Both women have imperfections. Yes, Florence Colgate's face is symmetrical, but her lips are flawed and her nose is off. If these were symmetrical and in proportion, as Sasha Grey's are, she would be the prettiest. So, perfection is perfection, a much as that sucks.

I lady at my work has a lazy eye and I think its adds to her beauty.

edit: well...actually 2 women I work with have them and it adds to there look, not detracts from it. I do know one person that it detracts from, so its really dependent on the person.

of course it's subjective and some people will be attracted to features that other people find ugly. and certain people's flaws made them more beautiful, because they're more interesting looking. but i think there's a minimum level of symmetry, and beyond that the person gets less and less beautiful by most people's standards.

Too little symmetry can be disturbing because it isn't usual.
Too much symmetry can be disturbing also, because it isn't human or natural.

Well I do think Florence is quite beautiful.

But I love her as part of a set of beautiful women.

I don't get this thread. Is imperfection... perfection? (posts a bunch of pictures of nearly perfect looking people.)

I think you have a different interpretation of (im)perfection than what I'm employing.

Oh wow, she is stunning.

Anyway, yeah, OP, I kinda agree with sns. I don't understand this thread. Also, Sasha Grey looks perpetually stoned, her eyes are so dead, which is one of the several reasons why her porno freaks me out.

Imperfection cannot be perfection, otherwise it'd be perfection.

No. The conclusion is: we aren't supposed to measure beauty objectively.

I found first woman more beautiful than second woman, but the latter has much more sex appeal, so she is more desirable, imo.

But if I wanted a model, I'd choose #1 very easily.

Yes, this.

It strikes me the same way as the "emotional intelligence" quiz where you have to identify people's emotions, and they are all gauged scientifically, except some of them don't seem right. You can have all the objective "requirements" of a conceptual ideal but there are x-factors that play in... I suspect with the emotion quiz, it has something to do with people's innate ability to detect imitation - our brain probably picks up on miniscule details that tell us that the person isn't really feeling the emotion he is attempting to portray. Here, I think it has to do with beauty being partially genetically determined, partially environmentally determined, and probably partially synergistic, a result of all the experiences and desires and innate preferences in your life coming together to form a complex formula that estimates "beauty". And beauty can be learned, too... we can come to find things beautiful because of certain traits or associations...

shortnsweet My point with all the pictures was that there are many different variations on the standard "beautiful woman", as there are myriad factors that play into beauty. I think it's funny that one was measured out. What's the point? Try to make more babies like her? I just really don't know.

there is no such thing as perfection, but one can be perfectly imperfect = there are the inevitable imperfections, but those imperfections doesent take away from the beauty, but adds to it. for example a wrinkle is an imperfection, but if its on the right place with the right person, it might fit to her better than no wrinkle, making it an perfect imperfection.

The conclusion is: we aren't supposed to measure beauty objectively.

Leave it up to an INTP to express a feeling with words better than an ENFP can. ;)

Wabi-sabi

Wabi-sabi (佗寂?) represents a comprehensive Japanese world view or aesthetic centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection. The aesthetic is sometimes described as one of beauty that is "imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete".

This is what beauty is for me.

Practicing Buddhism, I'm glad the Eastern ideology seem to align with my own. :)

Oh, I like!

I'm not so keen on the oversized element but mismatched uneven and asymmetric are words that perform for me. :wubbie:

I Just love this!!!
