Figuring out how the mind works, figuring out how society works, teaching people how they think (examining their thought processes), teaching people how they ought to think, helping them make decisions, and bridging the gap between disparate domains (e.g. engineers and artists).

I happen to perform most of this through software and simulation, where we can truly play with a model of their reality without breaking it

I tend to believe what someone titled their blog on this forum as, that you should strive to learn before you die, presently I'm channelling a kind of warrior-scholar vision for myself, that is to say that I'd like to develop to my full potential, physically, intellectually and I'd like to use that to do the best job of conveying my values and belief system to future generations as possible. Or at the very least limit the damage some how of what's being done by its wholesale abandonment, which is happening with the best of intentions.

My aspirations to struggle for the establishment of socialism have been tempered seriously by time, my aspirations which remained to try and correct what I could on an individual scale with social service have similarly been tempered too but my career as a residential social worker allows me to partially channel the second, maybe, though its not what I'd like to do for the rest of my days.
All for ourselves, and nothing for other people, seems, in every age of the world, to have been the vile maxim of the masters of mankind.

whether or not you credit psychoanalysis itself, the fact remains that we all must, to the greatest extent possible, understand one another's minds as our own; the very survival of humanity has always depended on it. - Open Culture

Understanding the world, improving lives by improving existing technology or designing new technology, teaching. A lot of this is related to my engineering background but it's very possible that the drive was what influenced me to choose engineering.

This is, however, not a final list. I am constantly learning more about myself and in the process, finding the words to describe the otherwise vague but persistent sentiments that push me into action.

Sounds like your calling is to help people find their calling.
I surely could use your help here, as currently I'm totally lost and have no idea about what my inner motivation might even look like.
Everything I have done up till now seems to have been externally motivated.
