I can't really say that there were films that "shaped" my childhood, but here are some ones that really stuck with me:

  • Hocus Pocus - a 90s witchy halloween film with Bette Midler and Sarah Jessica Parker
  • Practical Magic - another witchy film with Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock. I don't know why my sister and I watched to many witch films..
  • Death Becomes Her - It had Goldie Hawn and Meryl Streep in it. It was about women who wanted to live forever and stay young, but their skin peeled off in the rain or something.
  • Titanic - I first watched it when it came out. I was 5, I think. Gave me nightmares and I cried about it for days.
  • The Towering Inferno - Again gave me nightmares and contributed to the tremendous fear I already had of flames. I remember when I used to go to the market on cold days with my parents, and I saw the steam coming out of people's mouths, I used to cry and scream, and try to warn them that their insides were on fire.
  • E.T. - This one freaked me out beyond belief! E.T. was another one of my irrational fears.

Loved everything that had to do with the desert tho. Arizona/Texas/Nevada/Egyption desert <3 I live far north in Norway so it's probably why I have a longing for the desert.

That's romantic~

There were a lot of movies I enjoyed as a child, but Disney's The Little Mermaid, hands down, had the most influence.
I just vividly remember the serenity of the merkingdom and Arielle's beautiful, lithe fins.
I also really empathized with her curiosity for humans because I am equally curious about other cultures and, of course, merpeople!

Oddly, other childhood movies that I've recently rewatched as I've grown older had more of an effect on me now than then.
Also, television series, rather than films, probably influenced me more than anything (Pokémon, Sailor Moon, etc.)

Horror/Sci Fi, when I got to see my dad we went and rented a horror or sci fi movie every tuesday. I watched tons of them and became an avid horror/sci fi junkie, even today.

Harry Potter, from my 10th till my 12th. I used to watch Disney movies a lot when I was even younger, but I don't remember what they were all about. I just remember that I always thought it was sad that they never made a movie out of my favorite fairy tale (Little Red Riding Hood). Why the hell does Disney only make movies of fairy tales with bimbo princesses?
