what seems to happen in biotech is that everyone enters basically as a lab tech or apps specialist. Then as you define your skill set you migrate into new positions that make you happier.

So I started on the bench but enjoyed customer face time and helping them develop thier own assays so I moved into Training. Then I wanted to more forcefully drive development of products so I moved into Marketing. Some of my collegues never left the bench and others are moving into production, project management, QA, QC or product development positions depending upon what they like.

Perhaps you may get stuck in corporate America, however within that confine, identify areas which you can grow into and be happy in.

What is interesting in that BS level bench scientists are a pretty even mix of types. However where they go from there can become quite stratified by type.

As for money, it just seems to follow increasing responsibility. I like to change stuff, which means being responsible for stuff, which means more money. But it is always odd as that isn't why I go to work everyday.

This is not true. You have to like your job more than money to fully enjoy it.

Re: OP

I don't know that if you "do what you love, money will come." It seems better to say "do what you love and money will be irrelevant."

I used to think about this topic a lot, until I realized, I was just running away from my passions.

When we're passionate about something? It doesn't matter what stands in the way, we know what fulfills us, and what doesn't. Why fight it?

I have a friend who is a die-hard animator. For years and years, he would draw, and everything he did was to live/breath art. He was broke as hell, but talented like no other. He was recruited to work for Disney when he was only in high school. They paid him a scholarship for schooling for an x amount of years that totally went down the drain.

No matter what.. he never gave up. It was his life. Fast forward 8 years later? He graduated 4m CalArts, works as an animator for the Simpsons, Disney.. freelancing for 3 days a week, and he still rakes in at least $70,000 a year.. that's just him working whenever it's convenient for him. But to him, it's not even work. On top of that, he gets gigs for other projects he's interested in..

People like him, truly are an example that if you do what you love, then nothing else really matters. After all, i think that since our job occupies 1/3 of our lives, other than the other third consisting of sleep, yada yada, why not make it a GREAT one?

Freud was right when he said 2 passions humans have in life tend to be love and work. Why not make work enjoyable by being true to ourselves? We can also turn our other passions into hobbies.. (for those who are multi-talented, slightly ADD).

the principle that you're saying here is what i've been keeping constantly at heart too: "since our job occupies 1/3 of our lives, why not make it a GREAT one?"

your friend's case is seriously what i've been dreaming all this time:
- a job that i ENJOY, and feel happy everytime you go to work, and
- you make a living, even more, got paid WELL from it!

but,...the hard truth is: isn't this Reality sometimes (or often) can be really "harsh" to you, and your most-hardcore passions, and dreams?
how many people can be as lucky as your friend?
how many people who're also really "live/breath art", and even also "talented like no other",...who, sadly, doesn't get that fortunate to be hired by a huge, gigantic company like Disney (& thus, they often just have to 'suck it up', & settle for even much lesser than their utmost hardcore passions & dreams?)

what discourages me, too, is one thing that I've often heard:
"no matter how talented or passionate you are,
there are often more supply (especially in artistic field like music, animations, designs, etc) than demand (ie: employer, or those 'big' company that would hire you)"

I don't know how true is this statement,
but frankly-speaking, this statement has often put me in such a hard-slap Reality, that perhaps, talents & passion wouldn't matter much than ur BUSINESS-and-TONGUE skill (as many pragmatist people whom I've often me said to me), in this money-oriented world, sadly :(

please correct me if i'm wrong.
i'd be glad to know it!

^Growin up in a strictly 'pragmatic' family for me, can be really discouraging.. I see how they often preach about how this is 'Reality' and you just need to 'suck it up.' No. It's their reality. Mine is mine, and my happiness is ultimately my decision.

In my friend's case? He immigrated to the U.S. with hardly anything- no parents, 1 sibling, dirt poor. He literally would sleep on a mattress on the apartment floor and draw his heart out into his artwork. At one point, I remember, he would barely eat, and mostly worked his butt off just to pay for rent. He struggled, no doubt, but the outcome was what he dreamt of..

If that was his reality then? it certainly isn't like it is now..

Since life has its ups/downs, give/take, there are always certain things we can compromise, verses some things we can't. Really depends on what our values/needs are. To live a fully rich life? I think we still need to do something that nurtures us from deep within.. It's like fuel that keeps us going, and makes life meaningful, right?

"When you do what you love, money will come." That sounds like prostitution to me.

If money didn't exist, I theorize that we would be in somewhat of a utopian society. Just look at Nikola Tesla, he would of been the world's first billionaire (or according to todays inflation maybe trillionaire) BUT for the sake of humanity he tore up his contract! The sacrifice this man made for humanity still goes much unnoticed, we wouldn't even be able to be on our computers chatting right now if it wern't for him. They don't even acknowledge him in public education systems, they still point to edison, who was actually a bit of a villain in Tesla's story.

He tore up the contract because supposedly the power plant wouldn't be able to stay in business after paying him off his royalty. For the sake of humanity and for the sake of seeing his vision and his invention actualized, for the sake of the future, he got rid of the factor that was money.

And after all this how did humanity repay him? They didn't, he died alone, and pennyless...

when u guys're reading story like this,
would u think that Tesla died a 'tragic' life?...
or rather, do you believe that certain people have to, or perhaps rather, destined to "sacrifice" what he/she has, for the sake of humanity and betterment of world?
regardless of whether he'll get appreciated, or die alone and pennyless?

it is men like Tesla that I really put off my hat the most,...
that even frankly speaking, I probably still not able to do what he did, ie: when faced with two options, he chose the "sacrifical" option! instead of the 'fame-and-fortune' mainstream popular path!

in fact, I actually feel ashamed,
because I still have this somewhat nihillistic thought that we all will die anyway, and everything will perish, so in the end, everything just doesn't matter, in the grand scheme of everything in the Universe...
so why even "sacrifice", especially for this broken, corrupted & wicked humanity who often just don't appreciate these sacrifices deep enough?..

Well my point is, that if more people were like tesla, we wouldn't need money. And at that point, I think society would become somewhat utopian. But his story is rather suppressed don't you think? If more people knew then perhaps humanity would take a step towards that direction.
