i'll second broadcast, radio dept, and elliot smith.

animal collective sung tongs is really beautiful and almost pastoral. i remember listening to it on winter mornings on a long interstate drive white-washed with snow. panda bear solo would be good too.

post-rock stuff like godspeed, mogwai, obviously, do make say think and a silver mt zion. and most of all broken social scene or a kevin drew solo record.

i like the sea and cake, blonde redhead, definitely belle & sebastian. bon iver, fleet foxes, maybe my favorite band in teh whole world the silver jews with songwriter david berman (thinking the natural bridge, especially). um various records like the velvet underground and nico, i can ALWAYS listen to neutral milk hotel. leonard cohen works too, vashti bunyan.

more sound-focused mood music like caribou, grizzly bear, dj shadow, air, boards of canada, maybe even some drone-y stereolab, can, kraftwerk, the microphones.

shoegaze like jesus and mary chain or galaxie 500 which i personally prefer. my bloody valentine, etc.

i thought antony and the johnsons was a really good call too. maybe scott walker if you are feeling dramatic. i like the guiatarist leo kottke.

The Neil Cowley Trio — Loud. Louder. Stop!
Arvo Part — Tabula Rasa
Mastodon — Crack the Skye
Friendly Fires — Friendly Fires

Eclectic, I know. Works for me though

is any of you NF's familiar with arvo pärt? e. g. his piano piece "alina"?
floating, soaring, longing, inner tranquility and yet burning from the inside...

what do you feel, what comes to your mind, when you hear it?

i found it on youtube, but the recordings are awful (no subtlety at all) ! so if you're interested in this piece of art, download the original recording from limewire or so...

Check out David Gray's music, he tends to stick to the minor keys. I adore every album he's come out with

The soundtrack for the movie Less Than Zero is one of my favourites from any film. You can get it from the user who posted this track on youtube (there is no official soundtrack):

Patrick Watson is a genius, nuff said.

I love Muse. These are two of their lower key songs.

Ambient:

Eluvium
The Album Leaf
Stars of the Lid

Post-rock and Chamber:

Do Make Say Think
Esmerine (absolutely beautiful)
Rachel's (also beautiful)
Some of the saddest music I've ever heard is by Mono and World's End Girlfriend. The album is "Palmless Prayer/ Mass Murder Refrain"

Singer-songwriter/Folk:

Nick Drake: I could listen to the Pink Moon album every day for the rest of my life.
Bob Dylan
Uncle Tupelo (Would recommend the March 16-20, 1992 album)

I also have a bit of a soft spot for the Amelie soundtrack

I could keep going on with this list for days...

I have playlists on my ipod that are based on moods and my playlist titled 'contemplate' has:
Parting of the Sensory - Modest Mouse
I See a Darkness - Bonnie 'Prince' Billy
Street Spirit (Fade Out) - Radiohead
The Stars are Projectors - Modest Mouse
Baby Blue Sedan - Modest Mouse
Avalanche - Leonard Cohen
The Mariner's Revenge Song - The Decembrists
Raindrop Prelude op 28 no 15 - Chopin

There's tons more but these all put me where I want to be.

Intially when I read the title I immediately thought Sigur Ros. I love them so much... my favorite song...so atmospheric and evokes so many feelings:

YouTube - Sigur Ros - Gong

Jose Gonzalez is good ...acoustic sound and a pure voice (He appeals to my INFJness often, espcially with this song):

YouTube - José González - Crosses

this song reminds me of Germany in the eighties when it's raining...

YouTube - Justice - Valentine

I don't know how other people feel about Enya, but I will admit without too much shame that I love Enya:

YouTube - Enya - Wild Child

I'm weird and love melancholic music that is also profound...so I have a thing for funeral music

This is polyphonic choral music and everyone should listen to it because it is extremely beautiful and moving (no seriously, you should really listen):

YouTube - Sleep - Eric Whitacre - Polyphony

this song is beautifully melancholic and folky:

YouTube - Sibylle Bayer - Tonight

I also reccommend anything by Why?... they are indescribable with beautiful poetic wordiness...

YouTube - WHY? - The Hollows

YouTube - Why?- Fatalist Palmistry

Finally, to round it out some very rainy classical music:

YouTube - Erik Satie - Gnossiennes No 1

YouTube - Gymnopedia No 1

YouTube - Erik Satie - Gymnopédie No.3

These are some of my all time favorite songs...

I hope you listen/enjoy!

May an INFP recommend some albums? I don't get melancholy much anymore, but when I did, some of the ones that I liked were (in alphabetical order):

Belly - Star
Depeche Mode - Black Celebration
Fiona Apple - Tidal
Led Zeppelin - In Through The Out Door
Mazzy Star - So Tonight That I Might See
Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon

Trust me, it all makes perfect sense together! :whistling:

Sweeet, one of the melacholic-ish albums I like is in through the out door. Well, being a huge Zeppelin fan, I suppose it's their most melancholic album...or weirdest. Yeah I definitely recommend.

Which reminds me (not on the album):

YouTube - Led Zeppelin- In The Light

I love this song by Led Zeppelin. It's quite weird, moody, and atmospheric.
