To get one's goat: It implies taking something valuable (?) from someone. It's suggested that it comes from the French. To steal someone's goat was to take their only source of milk.

Another suggestion from a quick google was that racehorses used to be kept with goats to calm them. Don't ask why. If the horse's goat was taken away the horse became unhappy and less apt to win the race.

but whatever...because my original answer DID apply...means the same thing right?

Take a page out of his book and just ignore the citation. There are ways to keep these things going forever.

Oh crap, a clown squad! They're actually a band of trained assassins that dress as clowns to be inconspicuous. But don't hire them... they are loyal to no one.

Horses are prey animals that live in herds. Being away from the herd frightens them. They also create a bond with one animal in the herd. Goats were used coz they were less nervous and more easy (smaller etc) to transport than another horse, so race horses often had a goat as their 'best friend' in the herd.
