Wait... is the robot unicorn or alcohol making you drunk?

I'm getting up there, some wine and mixed drinks.

    Dissatisfied

I'm feeling very French tonight. I have a bottle of Merlot and a blue vein cheese. And the Merlot tastes better with every sip.

But the truth is I feel repentant. On the one hand I am sorry I keep clobbering you but on the other I don't plan to stop.

My confessor would tell me that repentance without amends is no repentance.

On the other hand I want to repent, I almost want forgiveness, but not quite.

And there of course it the rub.

It is obvious to me on the, "Shortest Books Ever Written by Typology Members", thread that almost everyone here has better social skills than me.

But in a way that doesn't matter because what you don't have you don't miss. And the terrible truth is, I don't miss my social skills.

I know, for instance, you do because you keep telling me. Of course that really pisses me off but I understand that is because you are pissed off by me. So there is a certain symmetry there.

But as I sip my Merlot and the blue vein cheese disappears, I am of course mellow but somehow dissatisfied.

But I appreciate the Led Zeppelin below.

Alcohol is in this respect similar to pornography: it promises to satisfy, but only if you have some more. Then some more.

But we may say that the Victor that has not sipped from his bottle is a long way from the Victor that has tanned two bottles of the stuff.

We may start off with good intentions and a nice blue cheese, but finish necking another bottle.

This is not solely an issue of self-control. It is the inability, even by the most sophisticated, to imagine themselves in the future. The smoker who promises his wife a helfy forfeit should his endevours at giving up fail; the junky who promises on his mother's life not to go near the brown horse; the serial philanderer who cannot keep percy in his pocket, but whose marriage is surely worth more than 20 minutes of fun. Etc.

This is called Akrasia. The point is: if you cannot know who you will be after a bottle of wine, how can you know what you will be in 5 years, or 10? Will you still be you?

My God, what a question, and so well put.

In a way it is beyond answer, the perfect question.

And of course you are absolutely right. I don't know what I will be in five years. And so how can I know what I will be after this bottle of Merlot?

I hope you will be there to tell me.

This all is so very tender...
Your kisses, sweeter than honey. But guess what, so is my money.

    This is pregnant with meaning.

On the face of it, why should we not be in control of ourselves. But the fact is, we are not. And you have given birth to the word 'akrasia'.

I have an explanation of this human tragedy, and I call it a double trance, a trance within a trance, where one trance reinforces another and so back again, until there is no way out.

But this no way lessens the tragedy, but perhaps it may, in the future, show us the way out of the trap.

Of course a trance within a trance may lead us to ecstasy as well as addiction - a two sided sword.

But in the meantime we have each other.

I shall try to be, Victor. Telling it, in my own quite way. But who will that fellow be, in 5 or 8 or 10 years? - Certainly not me.
