    Given Fred and Daphne's clothing in context of the era, it may be that they had rich or upper-middle-class, pampering parents that would throw away money for anything.

    However, it may be more reasonable to assume that the gang sold weed and other "natural" drugs.

    So do you think it's more of a scenario where one of their parents bought them the hideous mystery van as a gift and they grabbed some friends and decided to spend their time leisurely solving crime?

    Shouldn't they have jobs anyway though? What do they do?

    They just charge for their services, as soon as the cameras go off. Maybe it's not as "fun" to show that part to the kids, but it's how real life works.

    That gets tricky in the episodes where the person hiring them also turns out to be the villain.
