Default Could you be friends with a racist homophobe?

I am surrounded by these racist, conformist homophobes, and while I keep my judgments to myself, I find I can barely spend time with most people because my private judgments against mainstream society are so severe and intense and negative. I have a couple "weird, outcast" people I hang out on a one-on-one basis who I find ok, and it bothers me these people are picked on. I defend them, and I get picked on. I know I am too weak and powerless to correct the big picture on my one, but I am ready to start a movement.

It is time for hatred and greed and prejudice to be laid to rest. I call for an outing of all hate groups and an end to discrimination of others on the color of their skin, their gender, and their sexual orientation. I see a future where religious extremism is extinct, and people are either progressively religious and letting science inform their worldview, or secularist, because despite uneasiness with religion, I believe promoting religious pluralism is far superior to stamping it out. We must march on towards a better tomorrow. END OPPRESSION TODAY!!!!

No, but I have plenty of acquaintances who have expressed opinions I was completely disgusted with. And feel disgusted with myself on the occasions I haven't spoken up.

Well this will be interesting to find out who is actually tolerant.
You're not being tolerant unless you actually disagree with the other person.

You know it's possible to seperate people from their beliefs. To be intolerant of beliefs and tolerate the person.

    Hate the bigotry.
    Love the bigot.

I potentially could. There's more to a person than their views, however if they were generally fearful, angry people, they probably wouldn't be that pleasant to be around. Also, there would be limits to the friendship because there would be certain topics or situations that would make me too uncomfortable.

Where I live, extremely racist or homophobic people are the minority. If I was "surrounded" by people who shared a worldview and set of values totally opposite to my own, I'd find it frustrating too.

yes. as long as they don't remind my of their beliefs every 4 seconds. like @Beorn said you can seperate the person from the beliefs, if I didn't do that I'd have even less friends than I do.
    In no likes experiment.

Well, where do you live? It would be nice to be in a place dominated by love and compassion rather than hatred and fear.
