For other Europeans: would you agree with the claim that Biden is actually the conservative candidate in the current duel across the pond ? Why ?

Biden is left of center on center on social issues and right of center on economic issues. It is too simplistic to call Biden a conservative candidate but it is true he probably has more in common with conservative parties than say socialist parties in Europe.

In America, social issues are bigger issues than economic issues. American politics this Millennium has been fought on the wedge issue like abortion, gay marriage, illegal immigration, religious issues, identity politics, climate change, nationalism, ect not on reforming economic policy. Even by British standards, American political centre is way to the right; the British Conservative Party accept the NHS, put up minimum wage every year, introduced gay marriage, accept climate change, and one of the most ambitious transport decarbonization targets.

I agree with Falcarius. Through German eyes Biden might be a centrist on economic issues but is liberal (though nothing bold) on social issues. @Virtual ghost I know you tend to go by evonomics rather than social issues, but in most Western countries the social issues (plus some welfare issues) are what really mattered these last twenty years or so.

Der Spiegel currently has a magazine cover with Biden and Trump titled "shameless vs harmless". I guess I don't have to explain who is who...

I am just asking out of curiosity (this is exactly why I put that "why" in the end).

However I am not really going just by economics. For me the guy is clearly pro market while in social issues he is some sort of a centrist. What in the end makes him some sort of a mild right winger, conservative. Although here we would simply say "capitalist". For me Biden is kinda the poster child of what the west fundamentally is and therefore I don't see the point in current drama and accusations. Plus indirectly I am testing how this looks from around Europe. Especially since I don't really see the guy as left anything (what isn't necessarily bad).

Continuation of the few posts back.

I would say this is a good thing even if the PSD is officially social-democratic party. Since in practice this is left wing Orbanism, because the party is basically the continuation of the regime that came down with the wall. As Orban is in problems with EPP that is how PSD is with it's S&D group ... and for very similar reasons. Also there is a new S&D party growing in the background since the original is "bad". So yeah, this should help in fighting corruption and general social dysfunction within the country. Which is of strategic relevance.

    Polls Austria

Also very soon we have elections in Vienna. Towards the polls the big gain of far right that they got due to the immigrant wave should melt out.
