Do you or would you own a vacumning, floor washing or lawn cutting robot?

They used to be called Roombas and Rumbas but I think there are different brands now, anyway, do you own one or would you own one given half a chance?

Does anyone remember "DJ Roomba" from Parks and Recreation? It was a Roomba that someone had attached lights and speaker doc and an iPod to which was driving around a house party blasting out the tunes, I think the idea is awesome, especially if you could some how sync the speaker doc with stationary speakers around the home.

I would get one if it were cost-effective, reliable, and programmable by the user.

Future ones would be a good idea for providing at-home care for the elderly and vulnerable; would delay entry to care homes and wouldn't be tempted to slap the client around if it thought no one was looking.

Maybe the 20th version, on account of the first 19 probably being terrible at the job.

No way man. They start by feigning ignorance and innocently sucking up dirt.

Next thing you know, their adaptive AI is covertly monitoring and tracking your life, and then slowly sucking up that.

Hence the need for the user to be able to (re)program the thing.

So you can covertly monitor your neighbours instead?
My neighbors aren't doing anything remotely worth monitoring from what I can tell.

that's what drones and/or binoculars are for. ;)

the two sides that war with me:

the one that can't sleep at night because #skynet
and
the lazy af person who wants to have things done by houseelvesrobots over night.

I have a Roomba. I love the thing. I've also hacked the shit out of its hardware and software. I would love an equivalent for each of the little bullshit minutia chores that have to be done.

I also have an Echo which is good for less overtly pain-in-the-ass sorts of stuff. These things need to stop pretending to be humans, though. No, Alexa Echo thing.. you're not a 'she', you're not a person; you're an 'it.'

Been considering the robotic vacuums but they won't remove the need to vacuum hard to reach areas. We'll see. A big pass on Echo since it's quite powerful in its ability to control so much within the home and is easily hackable.

Nope.

If computers weren't an absolute necessity I'd be a legit Luddite.

A Roomba that unloads the dishwasher and folds towels would be life changing and not like Pinterest life changing. I also have a newer Roomba and it's great now that it does rug/carpet and bare floors equally well. Actual robots - have to be entirely owner programmable. Or you end up with a I, Robot situation.

I'm with this. I adopt tech if I need to. The attitude of "innovation for innovation's sake" is what is going to cause a lot of problems.

Yeah if my T-1000 doesn't have a microUSB port and an API it's going into the trash.

I have a Xiaomi Vacuum Robot for over a year now. The scheduler, the automation is very convenient and the price compared to the Roomba. The filters expire, but that's ok. I let it run every day and it makes me look organised although I hate cleaning. It is basically a life saver for me. Because I really dislike having domestics.

During the time I've had it, from complete Chinese to English translation happening. Supporting saved maps and zoning after updates. I'm very happy camper. The only thing annoying me is, it tells me to replace the filter after heavy use in 14 months. Forced me to eventually guy and buy. I went to the fuel station and forced air pressure to clean the filter to buy more time. Reminds me to clean the sensors occasionally. My dad was impressed and bought himself one too. My mom was anti technology but now she carries it around like a pet. It does have trouble with wires, so need to ensure nothing lays on the floor. Also have trouble getting in and out of rooms. With slight higher or lower wooden covers, but after firmware updates seemed to make appear feisty and gets to negotiate it better each time. Remote controlling it from where ever is also neet.

I liked that film, despite the fact it was different to the source material (it was better in its depatures and divergence than I Am Legend for instance) but a great version of the "Paternalistic" overlords idea as opposed to the Robots kill their progenitors as in Terminator, Collossus (arguably a better idea than the Skynet thing) or The Matrix.

There was a great episode of The Outer Limits, the new series, in which there was a sex robot AI, I had some friends who got obsessed with this episode, the robot was actually meant to be a "carer" droid but with that aspect, anyway, the AI broke down and became murderous because it confused love with obsession, possessiveness, all that kit and kaboodle.

To be honest I'd me much more interested in some kind of AI that did chores rather than being some kind of 3D porno fantasy. Then again, they could go mad on the home cleaning front and crush atoms together so hard while cleaning that they nuke the block.
