Meteors set to light up Australian sky | The Australian

Meteors set to light up Australian sky

Matthew Knott | December 14, 2007

STAR gazers will receive an early Christmas present tonight, with a spectacular meteor shower expected to set the sky ablaze.

The shower, known as the Geminids because it appears to come from the constellation of Gemini, is an annual event, but this year's is expected to be one of the best.

Sydney Observatory curator of astronomy Nick Lomb said good conditions should allow all Australians to view the shower, with no moon expected to be visible. Click here to for a diagram of where to look in the sky.

The shower will start at about 11pm (AEDT) tonight, and peak around about 3.45am (AEDT).

He looks like he's going to fall... what's keeping him up there? Is the gravity too weak that high up? I would be scared to have that job.

Ed White, Jim McDivitt and the Gemini 4 capsule were in a circular orbit. Leaving the details to any physicist here, White was able to remain up there through velocity, resulting inertia, its countervailing of gravitational effects and the curvature of the Earth.

I would be scared to have that job.
That's why it was Ed White's. In fact, there was speculation that the astronaut was reluctant to end his spacewalk and return to the capsule.

Hubble image of galaxy NGC 5033, an unbarred spiral galaxy some 40 Million light years from Earth. It’s measured at a little over 100,000 light years across, so it’s similar in size to the Milky Way.
