New Computer?

So I am having a hard time figuring out what I should do. My computer is broken and I was thinking about getting a new 13 inch macbook/macbook pro however they have core 2 duo processors. I mostly do homework/ surf the net/ music/ pictures. My other options would be to buy the 15 in MBP for $1700 for the newer processor(not sure if its worth it), go for a windows based PC, spend $280 to fix the current comp and wait. Since the core 2 duo processors are going out the door pretty soon, would it be unwise for me to purchase one or do do you think that they will still be viable for the next few years? Should I consider one of the other options?

For the mentioned tasks, which are not too heavy, the Core 2 Duos are still good enough, and the newer ones in the Notebooks are not THAT much faster that you would be totally crippled.

If you should get a Macbook anyway is the other topic. If you want the Macbook because of the MacOS, then go for it. If you don't care about it, you could also just get a Windows PC.

Great, concise advice! :nerd:

For a high quality, high performance Windows laptop look at a Toshiba Qosimo., as they have great specs and stand the test of time, e.g. well built.

OPTION #2

For an entry level laptop, I bought a Acer that came with a dual core processor, 4 GB RAM, 320 GB Hard Drive, Wireless N, DVD Writer, Windows 7 Home 64 bit edition, and MS Office 2010 Starter Edition for $448, and I'm sure you can find one for less if you look. Try to top that! It out performs a Dell that I bought a year and a half ago and costs 50% less!

core 2 duo is okay for surfing the internet, personal computing and simple photo editing. If you use it for movies, you need atleast a 15" because of details. Beyond the Mac's its not only the processor that should be the main decider. Its a combination of different things, such as graphics card, hard drive and quality of the screen. And with laptops how ergonomic they are compared to the situations you use it. Which means you need to see it IRL before you buy it. Also look for laptops that are a little bit harder to open, because if they are too easy to open they potentially have a higher risk of problems with the connectors to the screen. Generally look for how robust it seems compared to other laptops.

Edit: Try and look at MSi laptops the rumor says they are pretty good.

Thank you. I was just afraid that if I got new computer now that it might become obsolete without the newest components but now it doesn't seem to be the case. If I do get a macbook, i will go for the 13 in. Also, if I can find a good PC with good virus protection (not norton), I may consider that.

Microsoft Security Essentials is free. It should just be bundled with PCs, but I guess Microsoft doesn't want to alienate partner companies like Norton. That's pretty much all you need though.

Good point! :D

I have used AVF Free Edition for years and NEVER gotten a virus.
The current version is AVG 2011 FREE EDITION:
http://free.avg.com/us-en/homepage

I also use "SpyBot Search & Destroy" as my adware/malware removal tool, and it is also free.
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

AVG updates itself daily.
You must manually update SpyBot every few days to keep it current. It's no big deal, it takes like 1.3 minutes and is an easy thing to do in the midst of other PC time wasting tasks. :)
