Montreal scientists unlock mystery of early molecular mechanism


Two Montreal researchers have proposed a new theory for a question that has long vexed evolutionary biologists: How did a mechanism thought to help build life self-assemble?

Sergey Steinberg, a biochemistry professor at the University of Montreal, found the answer in the ribosome, a relatively large mechanism within the cell that takes RNA instruction and builds proteins.

His discovery, made with student Konstantin Bokov, has been published in the scientific journal Nature.

Scientists have long wondered how chemicals spontaneously came together to create proteins before life itself began.

Steinberg and Bokov's theory fills in a critical step in how life got started four billion years ago, said Stephen Michnick, the Canada Research Chair in Integrative Genomics at the University of Montreal.

A key breakthrough came when Steinberg found that chemicals could spontaneously come together and form something as complex as a ribosome. Previous theories had suggested only simple proteins could form spontaneously.

It won't shut the IDers up, they'll just ignore this inconvenient theory. They are all a bit embarrassing really, like the kid in class that eats the glue and glitter, and is only allowed safety scissors during art and crafts. They just can't handle real science, so they make up their own "play" science instead.

It is a frightening thought though that all multi-cellular organisms appear to be derived from a symbiosis of bacteria and the mitochondrium. Does this mean that multi-cellular life is an incredibly rare accident, or that if it is not, most of it hs developed very differently from us?

Then again, the Moon appears to have been always with us causing tides, but a near double-planet ilke ours is unique in the Solar System unless we count Pluto-Charon. Does that mean again that even if multi-cellular life develops, without massive tides such as this planet experiences, it will not transfer from sea to land?

The chances of life as we know it, Jim,. seem incredibly small. On the other hand, the potential for life as we do not know it is very large. The trouble is, would we recognise it if we saw it?
