1w2? Some will claim he is a 9w1. I think he is a 1w2 because he is a Reformer/Helper more than a Peacemaker/Reformer.

I don't think he was a bad president. People confuse unpopular with bad.

I think his working style didn't mesh well with the expectations and "natural" demands of being president at the time, it wasn't the greatest fit. Ford's pardon of Nixon also didn't seem to sit well with folks, in terms of the 1976 election.

Carter's reputation seemed to improve a lot more once he was no longer president and just did his thing.

I've often given this thought.

Trying to consider his Presidency as objectively as possible (without letting his post-POTUS humanitarian efforts taint my analysis), I've noticed that critics tend to zoom in on a few major examples as proof of him being a terrible President.

-One, the failure of Operation Eagle Claw. This is a legitimate criticism, even if I don't think he is 100% responsible. I blame incompetence on the part of his military advisors, military personnel handling the operation, Generals beneath him, et al. However, Carter should've had the foresight or assertiveness to ensure the highest competence from those beneath him. The buck stops with him. He isn't fully responsible, but he is still somewhat to blame. Americans like to win. Trump tapped into that sentiment in his campaign speeches ("America doesn't win anymore").

-Also, Iran's fundamentalist gov't came to power on his watch, and the Soviets invaded Afghanistan. I don't see either of these as Carter's fault, but I often see both cited in discussions on his legacy. Conversely, he was able to end the Egyptian-Israeli conflict and that peace would last for years.

-Second, the infamous Crisis of Confidence speech. People often cite this as contributing to his defeat in 1980. People don't want to be lectured by the President, they want to be comforted. In that speech, Carter looked less like a President and more like a southern Preacher. However, he was more or less correct in everything he said in that speech. So this one is more an issue of perception. People like a Reagan or Obama type because they use rhetoric and feel-good words that make people feel warm in times of crisis. He failed to do that in this speech but I think people who just want to hear feel-good rhetoric from their leaders are as much to blame in this type of scenario.

-Third, he's usually criticized for being too weak on his handling of the economy. He was really no worse than Nixon and Ford in this regard, and arguably ended Stagflation through combined efforts/effect of deregulation and Paul Volcker's policies as Fed Chairman. Granted, what they did was create an intentional recession to end Staglation, but some economist have argued Carter saved the economy in doing this, it just wasn't immediately felt. Reagan gets a lot of credit for this because the effects started showing while he was in office. Funny how a lot of libertarians love to bash Carter when his deregulation policies may have stimulated the economy by increasing competition and leading to lower prices--effects that have been felt over the last few decades but weren't immediately obvious. He also ended Nixon's gas price controls, which really helped the energy crisis to die down. I think Presidents elected during economic crisis are almost always damned if they do, damned if they don't. They're either perceived as doing too little or doing too much.

-A legitimate criticism is he was unable to work with congress effectively, despite Democrats holding a majority. Ideologically, he was center-right, and Democrats then were more liberal than the moderate wave of democrats that came in the 80s and 90s. That's no excuse though and he could have made a better effort at working with his party.


-Also he didn't start any wars

I don't think he was terrible, I think he was an average President whose good accomplishments were balanced out by some bungles, and had he served a second term, he would be more highly regarded--I think Carter's big misfortune was he was plagued by many of the mishaps that usually come later, in a second term, and he just never could recover from the damage to his image. I think in many ways he tried to govern as many liberals and conservatives say presidents should govern, but when it comes to it, that sort of restraint doesn't always look good in leaders as people simultaneously seem to have thing for benevolent dictators.

Sorry, no thoughts on his enneagram but I think he was a likely FJ type elected at a time when people would have preferred an EP type.
