once again, just curious: which type do you think this character might be?
my guess would be ISTJ (with an "unofficial" ASD). there has been some debate between me and my friends as to whether he might be INFJ or INTJ, but that was some time ago; since then he has developed in such a way that i think these could be safely excluded. what do you think?
name: T. (male, late thirties)
- brutally honest. usually seems tactless, oblivious to others' feelings. outspoken about disturbing truths, either fails to notice or overlooks people's reaction to his words.
- uncompromising, categorical, often makes harsh judgments. believes that in some situations the end justifies the means. sees nothing wrong with sacrificing a smaller number of lives to save a much greater number. strong sense of justice, insufficient sense of mercy.
- extremely neat, tidy and organized. has an outstanding sense of style; however, tends to overdress somewhat because he may not understand when one is expected to wear more casual clothes. favors formal garments (usually the traditional variety). fond of strong perfume.
- considered cold, insensitive, distant and "dry" by everyone except one or two significant others. has been called a "stuffed shirt", "robot" and "wooden marionette".
- typical background mood: somewhat elated, overconfident, with an unintentionally loud voice that lacks modulation, broad, sweeping gestures that look slightly odd/give an "off" vibe, and a unique glint in the eye. despite this expansive exterior, is extremely introverted and difficult to connect to even on a basic level.
- was beaten and locked in the basement by his father for being "strange" and a disgrace to his family, then given to a military school in the hopes that they would succeed in beating out the strangeness (his family belonged to a local scholar-warrior caste and his father wanted the tradition to be continued). did surprisingly well there despite occasional misunderstandings because of how well-structured the environment was.
- much more comfortable with discussing facts, not ideas or feelings. becomes frustrated when something is not specified clearly enough. finds the outward expression of emotions draining, especially when talking to strangers.
- was an ardent supporter of the established system at first. this slowly changed after he started to teach at the academy. saw that the system was corrupt to the core, if there was any real system to speak of altogether - not one that would be worth fighting for, at any rate. (in that society, child soldiers were a widely accepted phenomenon. this went against his personal values, and at the academy, he had a chance to observe first hand how damaged these children were). went rogue, started to work against the system.
- used to be both socially and physically awkward as a child (ran into furniture and corners in doorways, dropped things frequently, moved in a stiff manner etc.). after years of training at a military academy, the physical awkwardness diminished to a dramatic degree, but the social awkwardness remained. this is especially noticeable in situations which require him to act on his intuition rather than relying on the established rules of conduct.
- was a typical "little professor", had several narrow, specialized interests which stayed with him throughout his lifetime, the most important one being (xeno)lingustics. liked to collect encyclopedic information on each of them, excelled at categorizing and analyzing structures. eventually became a xenolignuist and a specialist in automatic translation software (his academy required one to specialize in a subject that was considered beneficial in solving local conflicts, this was one of them).
- hyperpunctual, particular about adhering to schedules. may panic if something happens spontaneously and disrupts his plans. this resulted in misunderstandings when he was a tutor at the academy (for instance, he would not accept a paper submitted at 5.01 if 5.00 was the deadline, as, to him, it was much more than just a figure, but this was difficult to understand for his students, for whom deadlines tend to have a relative, rather than absolute, importance).
- had to teach for a while when he was working on his doctoral, it was a disaster (no rapport/reciprocal connection with the students, enthusiastic lectures addressed "to the whiteboard", far too rigid about due procedure, deadlines and various rules/regulations. showed an excellent knowledge of his subject which he seemed to be incapable of communicating to others.
- formal style of speaking and writing.
- is much better in combat situations than in social ones. not likely to lose his head in a serious crisis, has been decisive and courageous on several occasions where others freaked out (partially due to diminished fear/self-preservation responses when faced with serious danger, but not only). huge contrast with the way he handles (or, to be more exact, fails to handle) situations where he has to interact with others and easily becomes lost, confused and helpless; other characters have commented on the way he seems to be capable of solving dire crises, but not smaller ones.
- was in a marriage that started out as arranged and was based on mutual obligation and respect, but developed into a strong attachment over the years. was
devastated when his spouse died in an accidental street shooting. became severely depressed, began drinking in private in an attempt to forget, but tried to hide the profound bereavement from others.
- upon becoming seriously ill, realized that he had find a duty to attend to, or he would sink. after being assigned to an alien (L.) to decipher its/her language, undertook the obligation to serve as L.'s personal interpreter and guide to the local culture and customs. started to develop feelings for her/it, resisted them because he saw this as a desecration of his wife's memory. finally gave in after it became clear that they had nobody left but each other. tried to fight his worsening mental illness and to suppress his suicidal impulses; saw himself as having no right to succumb as he had promised to take care of L. however, was unable to overcome them, was too careless, unconsciously sought dangerous situations where he could die. was fatally injured in one of them. in his final moments, was terrified to leave L. on her/its own and regretted that his illness had had the upper hand.
- is thought of as a strange, unpredictable person, tends to surprise others (often in an unsettling sense). many are wary of him because they fail to understand the reasoning behind his actions.
- values harmony within the family and intimacy with his spouse. demonstrated a capacity for great warmth and caring with his wife and later with L.
