i would put joan didion and anais nin as infjs.

kesey and henry miller i'm switching to entp.

i still think joyce feels more intj to me than infp. a product of introverted intuition more than extraverted intuition.

arthur miller, from my perception of him, feels more infj than infp. again, i could be wrong, but i can't figure out why he was put into infp.

i still flip flop on ginsberg, i think he's a dominant intuitive but infp could be right. dylan thomas never really struck me as p.

i'm thinking donald barthelme is probably more of an infj than an intp. after reading the rest of his short stories and his essays, intp was a wrong guess.

i'd like to hear if anyone had any other guesses for italo calvino. garcia marquez makes sense as infp, and calvino might, but i might have jumped the gun. i don't think borges is an infp either.

i am very interested to hear guesses on updike. i liked him on that charlie rose. jesus christ he does look like an enfj.

lol I know. Put he does seem extraverted, and I sensed primary Fe followed by secondary Ni.

Can you go further into this?

Yeah okay.

dylan thomas never really struck me as p.

What, the bumbling alcoholic Dylan Thomas lol?

i don't think borges is an infp either.

Fair enough.

What's the argument behind Tolstoy being INFJ? I usually see him typed as ENFP, which seems more likely, as I see Ne + Fi, although I'd argue he is an introvert and therefore INFP. Compare him to Dostoevsky (definite INFJ) and see the contrast between NiFe & FiNe in their heroes.

I think you're right. From interviews I've watched, Arthur Miller does feel more INFJ to me. And I've been waiting for someone to question Joyce. After reading Ulysses, he's Ni dom for sure. In Episode 3, one of his main characters references Aristotle to question his own means of perception. I'm still unsure if he's an NF or an NT. And Thomas Mann is another author I've often wondered about. Any thoughts on his type?

henry miller is very get things going but i see more Ti-Fe than Fi-Te. i see no Te. he likes to get into trouble in the entp way. he reads bergson (who i'm guessing is an entp too). he's so theoretical and closet-metaphysical, but in the entp way. he's an initiator like enp but i just get way more Ti. plus if you watch interviews, he has that entp feel to me.

kesey led the merry pranksters. he has serious Ti and can turn on the Fe charm when he wants to "non-navigate." his attitude fits more with entp to me. i don't think sometimes a great notion was a book written by an enfp.

anais has been discussed. she seems an obvious inj, i lean towards infj. very 4. it also, i think, demonstrates the entp-infj relationship with her and henry very well. exactly what she found inspiring in him and vice versa.

joan didion- i've only read one book. she feels more infj to me than any other type, but admittedly i don't have a focused impression.

i want to talk about lester bangs and chuck klosterman. both infs, but j or p i am undecided.

Mann is INFP, or at least people seem to think so.

Yeah I've read that too and I get the same feeling.

I've heard INFP for Bangs, and I alos think that Klosterman is an INFx.

Also you may be on to something with Joyce as an INTJ.

are you sure i wasn't the one saying infp for lester bangs? i like to think outloud, at times. i need to watch some interviews to come up with something more conclusive.

klosterman is so judgy, but my gut is that it's more infp judgy than infj judgy. i feel like infps identify with him far more than infjs do. i get the sense of Ne more than Ni. like his which would you rather do questions at the beginning of chapters (in killing yourself to live, i think?). he doesn't seem particularly organized in his perceptions, but he is acutely aware of his values. and they are tied to his perceptions in a "quirky" infp kind of way (and very interesting/funny as a result).

Bukowski is IXFP; Definitely not an extravert.

I thought Kafka was INFJ? It makes more sense to me than INTP.

the intps were extremely confident he was an intp. they made a pretty convincing case, but i would be interested to know if anyone has read his journals or diaries?

i don't have any idea why those quotations mean nf? he is concerned about art and a philosophy for aesthetics. (in these quotations) his writing reminds me of intj philosophers and is organized similarly to some of nietzsche's works like the gay science.

and this is neither here nor there, but for the most part, i find nf to be a useless abstraction. i find it much more valuable to guess based on cognitive functions. otherwise anyone who writes a novel is nf unless they totally neglect characters.

You make a good point. I haven't read Nietzsche so I wouldn't be able to see the similarities, but I'll take your word. I'm interested in how you guess based on the cognitive functions. For example, what makes a novelist Fe dom, and so on for each function? You seem to have a deep understanding of this.
