Default How Capitalism Erases Class Distinctions

Japan: Memoirs of a Secret Empire . Merchant | PBS

"Merchants dressed in cotton kimonos, and were barred from wearing silk. Laws prohibiting the wearing of silk by the merchant class were issued repeatedly (suggesting that rich merchants tended to ignore the shogun's edicts). By the early Edo Period, many merchants were emulating the samurai hairstyle, shaving the tops of their heads and pulling back the sides into a similar (though not identical) topknot. Since classes were not allowed to inter-mingle, it was important that one be able to differentiate among people."

We're operating on the premise that merchants anywhere are operating under capitalistic types of rules, that is, market forces drive prices up and down. Capitalist values helped to create a new class of people known as the middle class in Europe (although in Japan I suppose it was just a merchant class, at best). Increased wealth via exchanging value for value brought the lower classes out of poverty and into wealth that, previously, had only been gained through tribalistic wars. This allowed the merchants to intermingle with those from other classes (in this case, the Samurai). Class distinctions still existed, but they were eroding.

There are groups of people operating in Western civilization who, under the guise of good-will and civil rights, are attempting to bring the West back to the level of Japan's pre-merchant days or Europe's pre-capitalist era by exploiting certain superstitions about capitalism - that it creates greed, poverty, class divisions, war, and global warming (climate change, etc.).

The West was built on capitalism, not slavery which is the return to pre-modern classism and anti-capitalism. Even before human (not to mention civil) rights became a thing, capitalism was emerging from feudalistic Europe. And although human rights are important to maintaining a civilized society, it is also important to erase those class (and race) distinctions that create a less civilized society. That's why capitalism is more progressive than Progressivism.

    I just saw this:

"Many prominent families became merchants after the samurai class was dissolved in the 1870's. Today, Japan is one of the world's economic powerhouses."

People thrive when classism is dissolved in the acid bath of Capitalism.

Capitalism has lifted billions of people from poverty the world over. It's the single, greatest economic development in history. Many people don't know this because it's not taught in our schools.
Thank you Dolores O'Riordan of the Cranberries. I greatly enjoy the first 10 seconds of Linger.

I saw this on a network news program: there are segregated all-black schools in the US where students are taught anti-American values. There was a snippet from a class being conducted where the black teacher was telling her black students that capitalism is evil.

This was from maybe 10 years ago. I believe we are seeing these students all grown up now and participating in movements designed to take down everything American.

I'd say its more accurate to talk about capitalisms than capitalism to be honest, Japanese, Scandinavian, German and UK-US capitalism do not have a lot in common.

State-subsidized enterprise is socialism. In this regard, many Republican elected officials are socialists, despite Republicans' supposed distaste for socialism.

Why Trump's 'Buy American, Hire American' Is Un-American - Reason.com

To hype his "Made in America" policy, Trump invited 50 exemplary companies to the White House for a photo op. It turns out that 21 of them received various federal, state, and local subsidies worth about $600 million. If you're taxing Peter to subsidize Paul, chances are you're not creating much real economic activity.
I hate to make excuses for my assholery, but I'm on the spectrum, so if I insult you, it most likely wasn't intentional.

To be honest I don't agree with this and this is why I think that Americans in general don't even understand what socialism is. State-subsised enterprise is more like a crony capitalism, while state ownership is real Socialism.

Oh god, they don't. They think it's a half step from Communism. The US chooses to provide a meager ladder for people to lift themselves but it wasn't always this way. Thats why there was far more prosperity post war than ever before or since. Once they started doing away with those ladders, the large scale prosperity went with it. But there are many that simply won't wake up and just feel these things that assisted their grandparents, parents and even themselves are nothing but lazy assed entitlements. See how much sense it makes? So expecting them to understand or even listen is beyond them. Far easier to scream #MAGA!! on Twitter.
