As an explanation of what occurs in a boardroom environment, it's about strategic positioning.

    • What's your goal?
    • What are the impediments?
    • Who might gain advantage by removing the impediments?
    • Who might gain advantage by protecting status quo?
    • What are the perspectives of the other attendees?

Watch body language, watch where people sit and with whom, watch who comes late, watch who nods and smiles at whom. Show nothing, ask for information, allow your competitor to speak first. The more they speak, the more you understand the direction they want to go. If necessary, block or enable. Persuade.

To suggest that this is doing nothing is unrealistic. It accomplishes goals to either or all the benefit of the individual, division, company or industry.

This is the process of capitalism at both its best and worst.

    OK.

To me its a lot of nothing. Perhaps I'm just that talented.
All for ourselves, and nothing for other people, seems, in every age of the world, to have been the vile maxim of the masters of mankind.

whether or not you credit psychoanalysis itself, the fact remains that we all must, to the greatest extent possible, understand one another's minds as our own; the very survival of humanity has always depended on it. - Open Culture
