    Default Against Mother's Day?

Or A Cautionary Tale: How "Do-Gooders" Can Do More Harm Than Good

AGAINST MOTHER’S DAY? | Front Porch Republic

This is a short piece on how Anna Jarvis fought to have Mother's day recognized by the government and lived to regret it.

That's pretty much whot I think of valentine's day. And birthdays. And so on and so forth.

I find it rather sad that she realized too late that the people who sounded like jerks about it, were actually right the whole time.

Yeu should show respect and care for those yeu care about every day, not just once a year because it's a holiday.

The lesson I learned that from was actually a short story in english class quite a few years ago... at least a decade ago by now >.< Was a quickish story, only a few pages long, about a mother who suffered total breakdown from stress due to giving and giving and giving her entire heart and soul to her family... and getting nothing in return but misery and rudeness. Since that day I've been very careful to try to not treat anyone I care about poorly at ANY time, and to acknowledge and give thanks for anything that they do provide.

This's not something that yeu should need a special day of the year for. Yeu should be keeping in touch with those yeu care about on a regular basis, and giving them meaningful acknowledgments, not generic cheap candy and a card. Same goes for fathers' day, birthdays, and yeu know... anyone yeu value, regardless of their relation to yeu, be it a sibling, a parent, a guardian, a lover, a pet, or whotever. Making special plans on the same day everyone else does is tacky at best, and insulting at worst.

So no, I don't celebrate mother's day. I just try to be nice all year round.

I'm not cynical about days like this, feast days and public holidays, they're remanents from a time when people took things easy, made things work for them and put what they valued at the heart of things.
All for ourselves, and nothing for other people, seems, in every age of the world, to have been the vile maxim of the masters of mankind.

Just another symbolic gesture, from a society filled with such gestures.

I like Bill Kaufman's stuff. Like Lark, I have nothing against days like Mothers' Day per se, it's just the commercialism and cheap sentimentality that's been associated with it that gets on my nerves.

I don't really feel any emotional attachment to named days for the most part, but my mother does, so I'm willing to indulge her quirks on a day dedicated to her.

This. We can make platitudes about cherishing the people in our lives all year long, but the fact is most of us really don't, at least not in the way these days celebrate. I think while the consumerism that engulfs these days makes them seem schlocky and cheap, there's nothing wrong with the holidays themselves. And I love birthdays.
Everybody have fun tonight. Everybody Wang Chung tonight.
