    Default National Character?

Would someone tell me what exactly national character is? (I doubt that such a thing could exist at all).

It is a more focused type of Zeitgeist, or aspect thereof.

So a synthesis of body, mind and spirit. Yet all of these things are properties of an individual. In order for the nation to have character, it must have a self. How can a nation have a self?

One's country is like one's face...imperfect, pockmarked and seldom seen for what it is except for by others.

It's the collective personality of the nation and involves aspects of government, history, traditions etc etc.

Is there not some stereotypes concerning rednecks etc? So if your from the redneck area your more prone to be x and y.

Same thing. If your American your more likely to be more extroverted than someone from Japan.
Isn't it time for a colourful metaphor?

So this is basically what an average person of a nation would be like?

For instance, an average American would be like an ESTJ.

An average Japanese, perhaps an INFJ?

I don't think it's necessarily what the average person of a nation would be like. It's the "feel" of the nation itself. I wonder if it takes a decent amount of Fi to grok these national identities.

Originally I thought INFJ for Japan as well, but after discussing it with someone who knows a lot more about MBTI than I do, I think Japanese national character would be ISFJ (service and duty oriented, deferent, traditional, conventional).

Emotion is discouraged, so more ISTJ, perhaps.

ISFJs aren't known for being overly emotional in the presence of others. It would be improper.

    Yup.

The whole theory of all the socialising and stuff which some families in the states think of as normal makes me shudder to my very core.

There's no way I'm going round hugging everybody!!

I believe that they are ISTJ, same as the UK. I'm not 100% sure though.
