CNN - London aquarium to raise 'genderless' penguin

London (CNN)A same-sex penguin couple will raise an adopted "genderless" chick for the first time, a London aquarium announced Tuesday.
The four-month-old Gentoo penguin chick will not be named or characterized as male or female, Sea Life London said.
The chick is being raised by two female penguins Rocky and Marama, who were given the egg to relieve the penguin's birth mother of the pressure of raising two chicks.
It will be "the world's first penguin to not have its gender assigned," Sea Life London said.

Experts at the aquarium usually give newborn penguins gender-based names, but in this case "decided it was more natural for the chick to grow and develop into a mature adult as genderless which is normal in the wild until they mature," the centre said in a press release. The chick has been fitted with a purple tag on its wing so it can be identified.

SEA LIFE London Aqaurium's Charlotte Barcas helps place a purple identification tag on the aquarium's first Gentoo penguin to not have its gender assigned.
"While the decision may ruffle a few feathers, gender neutrality in humans has only recently become a widespread topic of conversation, however, it is completely natural for penguins to develop genderless identities as they grow into mature adults," said General Manager Graham McGrath.
"What makes us really proud at the aquarium is the success of Sea Life London's Gentoo breeding program and the amazing job of same-sex penguins Rocky and Marama who took the chick under their wing and raised it as their own," he added.
Rocky and Marama were given the responsibility of raising a chick after showing themselves to be a "close couple" for the past six breeding seasons and proving that they could create nesting conditions to raise a chick, the aquarium said.
The penguin may later be incorporated into Sea Life London's breeding program, "depending on the gender its biology determines," the aquarium added.

Dr Gemma Clucas, Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, said that male and female penguins displayed little difference beyond biological characteristics, which required close and "difficult" observation to distinguish.
"The two sexes in penguins behave very similarly to one another,"she told CNN. "They look almost identical to one another. Behaviorally, they act very similarly as well, particularly in terms of reproduction -- both males and females invest pretty equally in raising their chicks."

Rocky and Marama are not the first same-sex penguin parents -- in August, two male king penguins at a zoo in Berlin adopted an egg. Other zoos in London, Sydney and New York have also had same-sex penguin couples.
Gentoo penguins have "near-threatened" status in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, as a result of climate change affecting their feeding and nesting habits, Sea Life London said.

OK, Parks and Recreation made a joke about people being offended by a same-sex penguin wedding a decade ago. You need original material.

This thread has nothing to do with a fictional sitcom. It's about real life science. Gender dysphoria in penguins is not a laughing matter.

I don't appreciate the Young Turks' flippant attitude about these gay penguins, as though this story amuses them.

It's basically forced conversion therapy to preserve the species.

Where is there anything said about gender dysphoria?

Well I imagine that it's rather confusing for a penguin to not know what gender it is because of how it was raised. Let me be clear though, I support transgenderism in humans and animals.

What distinguishes a current event from a political topic?

Why is it important to you that it is not a political topic?

Politics are divisive and I strive to create a harmonious environment.

The real question is probably whether or not the penguins in question are globalists with a secret/not secret socialist agenda for the USA. ;)

You can address the OP from a political pov as long as you are civil about it.

No, you're thinking of dolphins.

The only thing stopping dolphins from destroying us is a lack of hands.

Dolphins never really had a strong sense of porpoise.

The real life science here suggests what is being described is a complete non-issue, at least until some humans come in determined to make it one.

Let me be clear. This is not an issue. It's a current event.

Animals do not understand these concepts, and this is kinda like projecting your political viewpoints on beings that do not understand such concepts. If the baby penguin was a human, I would consider it child abuse. Its already scientifically proven that most people are cis, even in non-gendered upbringing. Most likely due to things like evolution and instinct. And if upbringing is as influential as they say it is, in establishing a solid identity. I am pretty sure people are fucking over their kids, by allowing them to grow up as binary outcasts that don't fit in unless they surround themselves with other non-binaries. Society cannot function with extreme diversity, because one size doesn't fit all. It eventually becomes impossible to enact anything that can address a lot of people's issues. Which is why simplicity is better in terms of social constructs.

I myself am a "gender outcast" and know full well the problems I face everyday. But at the same time, Im not trying to make the world bend to me. I adjust to the world, because I am not entitled.

That's definitely true, its not new either, there's been lots of it so far as nature goes at times its a glorious, harmonious, spontaneously orderly state and at another time a red in tooth and claw, war of all against all in which life is nasty brutish and short.

The whole anthropomorphism of animals is an age old thing too.

I'm sure in time it'll be discovered that Animal Farm was a work of bigotry because it simply doesnt mention anything on the topic of LGBT themes.
