Croatia’s Conflict-Ravaged Vukovar Tires of War Tourism

It is again that time of the year, the anniversary of the fall of Vukovar.
However places like this were indeed turned into another Hiroshima or Dresden.

This is it one of the darkest moments in our local history but also main reason why I don't see market as the ultimate solution for everything in this world. After this your competitiveness is 0, there is no power, water or living spaces, most of population died or run away. There is no production or goods, you can't make profit here any time soon, etc. If you don't "artificially" rebuild the place the ruins will remain ruins, and that works for all large infrastructural problems.

Which is also why American interventions tend to fail these days, since no one really cares about rebuilding the place and then you get toxic messy environment you can police all you want but you can't stabilize it that way. As a matter of fact the more you police the more people you piss off. Plus this is probably why there are so many stories of US doing badly in natural disasters, since this requires sound intervention and redistribution. This world can't be fully stabilized without some degree of redistribution since too many places are just stuck and no one privately really wants to invest there. At least unless the foundation is build, which would allows some kind of "business as usual". However if the world isn't stabilized that will create bigger and bigger refugee problems as well as major market instabilities (since everything is interconnected).

History and morals of the story: For many Croats the Vukovar is a symbol of suffering and heroism. Since the city is on the very border between Croatia and Serbia and therefore it was first in the line to be overrun in what should have been quick war from Serbian perspective. However in Vukovar "the federal armada" got stuck due to a group of very determined defenders that kept resisting for months. However in doing so they bought the rest of the country time to organize itself and build some kind of army from scratch. Eventually the city was overrun but it gave everyone enough time to make something out of the situation and it greatly thin out the invasion. Even if city has fallen and people that lived there had to run away since they were "legit" target in this "cleaning operation".

However all of this opens a few important moral questions, if this city made such a sacrifice for the rest of us why it isn't ok for the government to fund it's rebuilding or give everyone there a socialized healthcare or socialized college (after all without this city the current order probably wouldn't even exist). The idea of free market based on individuals is born in a environment that was isolated from the "chaos and struggles of the old world" but as such it misses some of the key issues that are present around the world (and even in America at this point). Plus it is antagonizing many since it is trying to correct them, even if it isn't ideal tool to solve just about everything it claims it can solve. Because it basically forces countries to forget their less profitable areas and that drives the so called "populism" as a counter force.

    Food for thought.

After the country got rejected even on paper a few times they are now seeking some new/old friends, for which they will be a beach-head on the continent. However with this trade will develop and Russian energy will fully come in. China is already present. The current ruling party are ex-communists, which now plan to start a new mini trade block with ex-communists from Serbia and Albania (and perhaps some other nearby countries). The free world really shoot itself in the foot here.

Poll of the polls - Italy

Shows that the mainstream is slowly but surely loosing ground to fascist leaning far right. The top green and bottom 2 blue lines are far right parties and at this point they have 51% when combined.
What altogether places the open question on entire Eurozone if this score comes to materialization.

Are Police Officers Going to Strike Next?

The Police Officers Union (SPS) on Tuesday supported a strike by education unions and announced a protest rally and a strike to fight for a better financial and social status of police.

Over the last few months unions really activated in my country and now even police seems to be joining the party openly. What is altogether very uncomfortable for the liberal pro-western politicians. Especially since they have to water down almost everything they do, since left and right are sandwitching them as it is and in this country (neo)liberalism is clearly dying (even if it was never fully introduced due to mass resisting). In the last elections for EU parliament some 6 months ago 4 liberal parties together barely got 5% percent of the vote. While our pro American president and pro EU PM are in troubles regarding upcoming elections. Not to mention there is very active nationalistic rebellion in the ruling center-right party. Therefore if current rulers lose the upcoming elections they will surely be unseated even in the party. What is surely final nail in the coffin for modern liberalism in this country.

Donald Tusk elected president of European People’s Party

We will see where this will go. If someone should do something about far right that is EPP, since they are on their half of terrain. (what overlaps the bases for the most part)
However my local teachers unions have greeted the conference with transparents about saving public education.

Also new large poll came out and the socialist candidate came to only 2.5% difference bellow the incumbent pro-American president. For the record: when he announced his campain he was something like 30 point behind. By Croatian standards he isn't really radical but connection with US will take a hit if he wins.

The son of former German president Richard von Weizsäcker - Fritz von Weizsäcker - was stabbed to death at the end of a public medical lecture (he's a doctor).

The killer was arrested on the spot, but there were a few hours between the event and the publication of the perpetrator's age, gender, nationality and partial name (in Germany suspects' names don't get published fully due to data protection and assumption of innocence that were enough for right wing conspiracies to flourish. The nationality of suspects usually doesn't get published for the above mentioned reasons exept when there is a public interest and the far right with its cries of "they are hiding immigrant crime from us!" have pressured the police and media to do this more and more often. So now there are people doubting if the perpetrator REALLY was German German German (as in: yeah, so he was born here and his name sounds German, but what about a DNA test of his geatgrandfather?!) or if there is a huge cover up. Some also suspected a disgrundtled patient.

For those living on planet Earth: The perp was a middle aged German male with schichzophrenia who had a decade long obsession with the von Weizsäcker family and decided to kill a member of that family at a time when he was off his medication. The reason was that Richard von Weizsäcker was the head of a chemical company in the 1960s that (supposedly or really, I'm not sure at the moment) delivered chemicals used in the Vietnam war. This is what he declared to the police after his arrest.

I saw one person on Facebook being especially obnoxious about this, suggesting everybody was lying about this and wanting to know the perpetrator's full name (as if that was conclusive of anything. Ironically he had a stereotyloically East German name, to the point where I wondered if it was a troll account or if it was a good use of my tie to turn the tables and "profile" him going "Oh, your name is Meik, obviously you live in an underdeveloped rural area, have neither a girlfriend nor a job and hate foreigners, gays, Jews, women and academics". In the end I didn't do it.

Europe needs smart policies to combat authoritarian regimes

Over 40 percent of Ukraine’s trade is directly tied to the EU, but that will soon be eclipsed by China.

This is exactly why I said that at this point completely free global trade is basically pointless and counter-productive. Since in this part of the world we are swimming in the "investments" from authoritarian countries (Russia, China, Turkey) and they are coming directly through free market. While countries like USA no longer have the money even for their own needs. What means that the market is a direct threat to democracy since it bring more and more authoritarian influence, while it provides money for military expansions in "problematic" countries.

Naturally dipshits have problems with it, but I actually think that's a really good idea. I've often thought it was kind of messed up the way media over here handles high-profile trials and cases. When it's not actually been established that they are guilty, why is it ok for them to tarnish someone's reputation and potentially ruin an innocent person's life just because it's good for ratings? I think presumption of innocence is more important than feeding public sensationalism, but evidently the media outlets don't agree.
