I think a lot about this quote from Top of the Lake:
"You people all want to help someone...Help yourself first. Like the airplane. Put on your own mask first...All you hear are your own crazy thoughts, like a river of shit. On and on. See your thoughts for what they are. Stop your helping. Stop your planning. Give up. There is no way out. Not for others. Not for you."
It really makes me stop and think about how arrogant it is to act as if the world is ours to save. As if we are capable of saving the world when most of us don't even have our own shit together. The narcissism involved in believing you can be a savior when you haven't even saved yourself yet. It is very easy for people to become obsessed with the idea of doing good at the expense of actual results. A lot of times, these people end up inadvertently doing harm (see: most voluntourism). The energy that goes into these efforts leaves no space for introspection and self-questioning. It's how we become fanatics and ideologues and end up feeding right back into the exact system we set out to destroy.
