The total abscence of proof of an afterlife has not urged us to treat life as sacred, so I wouldn't expect much change from the opposite. It might actually further increase our disregard for it.

For what reasons might the knowledge of an afterlife increase people's disregard for life?

I don't know if there is irrefutable evidence of the afterlife, but I think there is pretty solid evidence of OBE's (out of body experiences). An example would be how some people in a coma can describe upon waking up what their visitors were wearing. Or how allegedly some people have been able to describe places they have never been to. This would suggest that the idea of a "soul" is real. If it is real, then when one dies, something must happen to this energy; either it dissipates, or it goes somewhere.
