During the Korean war the North Korean communists were surprised to discover they did not have to torture their American prisoners to get them to change their minds to accept the ideology of the enemy.

This is because Americans are trained to have an open mind, and when scientific materialism was presented rationally to them, they were inclined to accept it for the time being. And the American prisoners made broadcasts from North Korea supporting scientific materialism.

The North Korean communists expected to torture, and degrade, and even kill prisoners of other nationalities in an attempt to get them to change their minds. So the Americans were quite a surprise.
