Time Travel Is Possible, Says Stephen Hawking | Fox News

Moving backwards is impossible, Hawking says, because it "violates a fundamental rule that cause comes before effect."

If moving backwards through time was possible, a person could shoot their former selves.

“I believe things cannot make themselves impossible,” Hawking said.

However, once spaceships approached the speed of light, their crew would start skipping through Earth years on a daily basis, giving the human race a chance to start again.

When you're in an airplane and cross over time zones, getting to your location an hour before you left, you are, in a way, time travelling.

One time when I was a teen and was high off Ambien I discovered how to time travel and hurried to write it down before going to sleep. The next morning I looked at what I'd written and realized I'd just drawn a circle with two arrows on it.

Time travel into the past is impossible because of entropy, but by contrast, time travel into the future is precisely delineated in the equations of Relativity.

Here you will find the equations which tell us precisely how we travel into the future, click on Time dilation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Essentially all manner of time travel is possible, but that's a bad title for what's happening.

Entropy is not a "real" force in the universe, its an observable phenomena that only operates at a certain gross level of Newtonian [aka: Junk] physics. Just because something has been modeled, and accepted as scientific dogma, doesn't mean it has any pervasive power over the 'natural world', such a leap can only be like any other form of blind faith— presumptuous.

Since quantum gravity is still, simply a speculated "law" (or the regularity required to give the Scientific world view, the potential for a cohesive epistemology), acting as Scientism's greatest forerunner in its attempt to displace the necessary [and reasonable] notion of a Prime-Mover [unmoved]; the present state, with all its nebulous-causality intact, requires decisions to be affected into past events, this is also how prophecy works: the activities of consciousness' in some present time— identifies with a reading of itself from a 'past' account. The connection has to be decided in real time, and the past becomes annexed to the present. In this way, when prophecy is made and not yet fulfilled, it is driven by a [true and eternally valid] hope, for surmounting a particular hurdle which is imperative to "the will" [contained through the lineage of human intentionality, ie. the story of Chi in Tai Chi], in service of a next step in spiritual development (which is translated into great "predictive" power over the 'material world', because of how consciousness' energy has endowed itself upon the 'material world' in its peculiar treatment of 'material' as it's medium [or the medium of its will]). The prediction is purely virtual however, because it only manifests as the decision that links it with the past, is freely made in present-time.

To move away from the spiritual example of 'time travel' as it reaches into the past (*see above: as it's described much like the nebulous position of the cat being retroactively altered into a solitary event, which simultaneously changes the past by displacing probabilities with certainties (which probably endows the present-time with a greater probability-potential that might yet be unfolded by yet another present-time,— dispatching that probability as it identifies with choosing a further {unfolded} decision {each of these cases fall under the same 'eternal' category of how you render yourself 'chosen'})). The way to describe concrete 'time travel', which again, is the wrong thing call it, is simply to create a dimensional identification with a quantum signatures, if you can observe this, you can observe yourself into another dimension, which can be accomplished through what would either described as blatant wizardry (through the mindful focus onto the quantum signature: this is not philosophically explored, in media, but its illustrated in "Riley Rewind"), or through machines which simulate the same action, but through a tangible interface which translates those mental shifts of perspective, into something which can convey that information to a bubble of preserved consciousness (in essence, travel of this kind happens by altering the universe, while preserving the 'self'; this can get slightly complicated within a psychological account of "reality", you can see some of these issues explored in the Noein anime, where the dragon-torque reference: doesn't actually make the final philosophical claim well enough: suffice to say, dimensional travel is largely a curse, its not a fatal curse, but you can't cheat the power of decisions, all challenges posed to the 'self' will essentially be the identical, but there will be a level of convolution that must be overcome to continue spiritual advancement in life-force that has experienced this 'travel'... it also invariably traps the users into a very discreet kind of circle (not a circle of causality,) but a society which is prone to 'time-travel' will have already reached its cultural peak of development, and by its use, will arrest its' species consciousness, until the use of time travel gets properly managed/limited).

This 'travel' can still be used to help make the present clearer (as it does in the simple case of prophecy, and collapsing the 'wave-form'), by putting things (extending certain events) into the past, but generally recreational use is probably the only utilization that... is appropriate to this bothersome practice. It has been used to support some institutions, but it necessarily becomes a-political and a-cultural force very quickly (only concerned with with preserving a cohesive time-line inclusive of the civilization that allowed it to be discovered), because essentially it is obsessed with preserving the identification of its own quantum-signature (which must always, by definition, retain a measure of nebulousness,— which means it exhausts the ceiling to its productive work, quite 'soon' after it's discovered, whereby its also necessarily made secretive)— its also surprisingly unhelpful in solving the problems within culture and politics, and although it help co-ordinate information to tackle massive challenges faced as a species, it doesn't produce any answers to those challenges 'for free', the future is only as productive as the present might be generated by the decisions its containing.

Addendum: upon the point of rendering yourself chosen, which is meant to convey a deep spiritual connotation: everything you are not specifically chosen of: is to be chosen of some segment (or style of) a 'nebulousness', which is the void upon which the earth subsists upon, by the Earth's displacement of that void; and thus, it is a dynamic which gives room to the living, to further extend its being into. Revelations speaks of a 'new earth' and 'new heaven', these are not descriptions of a static development, but a continual cosmological accounting by a metaphysical understanding.

Great post, I agreed with what I understood, however, the section starting around where you mentioned about "Quantum Signatures" was difficult for me to understand. Could you elaborate on what a quantum signature is?

[MENTION=20790]Zangetshumody[/MENTION],

Great post, I agreed with what I understood, however, the section starting around where you mentioned about "Quantum Signatures" was difficult for me to understand. Could you elaborate on what a quantum signature is?

A quantum signature is itself a bit of a mystery, because there is more than one way to arrive at a "quantum signature", which is why subjective conscious experiences may manifest in the form of separated units (individual people,) which may freely interrelate with one another, without a schism of requiring a unitary agreement on a process to identify facts in a material world (which is also why Science as a coherent epistemological system, is a doomed enterprise) (The theory of relativity, itself models this scope of 'special relatedness'— when it illustrates that the simultaneity of events is relative to each observer, and can only be calculated on the basis of a particular point of observation (which is always an arbitrary decision to align with a particular perspective, never rendering an 'objective' fact, because the facts literally change, depending on each observed account of the record (this is also because there are 6 essential elementary motions {spins}; so the system always finds equilibrium, without recourse to any definitive reliance on third dimensional [read as: temporal] distinctions (which can only ever exist as hypotheticals when regarded outside/between any specific instances of subjective observation)).

Very broadly speaking, the "quantum signature" is a particular read on a situation, as information which pertains to communicating on the level of quantum reality— the signature is just a key, your already in possession of such a key, and depending on the character of your signature-key, will unfold the qualia rendered by your continuing experience/persistence. A signature, for the purposes of 'time travel', has to be rich enough to preserve the consciousness of whatever communication is going to manifest through a decision happening in present-time (ie. the continual unfolding of the present— to look like it has taken a bit of itself (aka a 'time traveler') back into an earlier state, as a novated experience of the [mixed] present~ needs to put a conscious-"self" into a bubble, and make the 'bubble' forget everything that made the signature appear to concord with, whatever happened over the last 40 years (so the bubble will naturally precipitate an environment condition, in equilibrium to the identity of its quantum signature***); so the bubble folds all the certainty is had relied on, back into an envelope of nebulousness (which can be accomplished by many 'thought devices' that unfold mental focus into this state of novated observation, it requires a system of information collection, and then a dispatch of such a collection, in a mechanism suited to manifesting the degree of nebulousness required by the aim*****.)

***Addendum: the best illustration of this, is imagine there is a big air bubble deep under the ocean, seemingly because of the 'natural world', the air bubble, being less dense than the water, will rise up through the ocean, but relative to the bubble as itself (~as a entity that is 'decided' about itself), the ocean is sinking down, moving more of itself underneath the bubble, and the sky just above the ocean, is traveling down until it meets up with the air bubble. When the quantum state decides to identify itself as an air bubble deep under the sea: the environment radically re-orients itself in order to accommodate the existence of the chosen state {chosen because it is validly regarded as being 'decided' according to the quantum-entity of a functioning 'self' (self means: subjective point of consciousness)};- relative to the bubble as a static description of its signature-existence {note- static descriptions, which are maintainable through the unit of 'self', is what co-ordinates any observable reality by the recognition of its constituent innate structure~ So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female...}: the ocean is sending all the water between the bubble and sky to move underneath the bubble, and the sky is either being pulled lower by the ocean's downward displacement, or the sky is pushing against the ocean as the environmental equilibrium propels the sky to encompass the shape of the bubble's area.

***** The aim portion is where this whole things kind of falls apart, as I said before, time travel can essential only be used to make what's going in the present, more clearly visible (if managed with the utmost integrity, competence and intelligence). But the mysterious thing is: time travel offers no promise of 'control' (in any definitive sense), everything that is available and unavailable is still essentially always present (within every subjective-state of consciousness)... so, only appearances are made malleable.. appearances do however, have there own aesthetic value, which lend themselves to refinements and the development of culture and language (which generally is what is denigrated when a civilization utilizes 'time travel' within its midst to effect the time line instead of helping delineate the lineage of communication that is obtainable** from it.)

** obtainable ... is component party of what could be probable... uncovered through what a decision might unfold by the character of it's choice (and the correlating quantum signature which that chosen character permits (truth and liberty is the reduction at the basis of all 'choice', so whatever stupidity is contained within the decision to shift into a new time, will have a stark meta-physical mirror effect upon the spiritual evolution of the subject's involvement into the subjective experience of the [then] 'mixed' present [that appears to have shed a tract****** of unfolded decisions]).

It bears mentioning, that there are at least two instances in the bible where the world is reshaped according to a quantum 'shift', mixed into reality. Once there was a solitary surviving Jew, and with the hand of the Lord, and while holding a staff made of bone-remains, he shifted reality into one where he was not the last remaining Jew, walking into a new earth shaped by the Lord's hand. Also a great prophet "slept" as a stone, through about 200 years, so he might experience a further era, according to his fulfillment of God's mandate.

****** the ultimate trump in the time-travel shitstorm, apart from all the smaller impositions of contractual limitation: is that all of the universe had one beginning, and all the the universe will have one end; so either of these references can be utilized as a commonality, with which to touch upon an inter-related experience of "mixed' present. And the mixed set of observers that are each sharing that present, could either of them (taken as a group) be said to jointly claim either of those two references (which is necessary because relative to each 'self'— you never want to claim the end of the universe as your subjective reference, or you have given up hope for an eternal claim upon self-determinism; if your subjective experience condemns others within the 'mixed' present, its not a concern by their subjective experience of the record which they might choose— responsibility from a fully articulated liberty is thereby conserved and eternally accessible no-matter who might argue a stronger claim of the environmental appearance, although the 'future' must displace nebulousness into the record of that jointly-mixed conscious experience, to support all fixtures which seemingly deviate from the record of their arrival: they will forget themselves to themselves as their consciousness is displaced by the viable manifestation of the joint mixture to all present conscious decisions).

To expand on something that I didn't spell out in my last post: you make an envelope by taking a decision, that utilizes information that has been repackage, by utilizing information that was certain in such a way as to occlude it by a nebulousness.

If you want conceptual examples of such things, you merely have to have to look at any of the 'magical' devices in the realm of informational mathematics.

I'm too tired to go into any detail of this foundational stuff... but to draw some on some advanced examples: ever notice how fractals are capable of 'being eternal', and they are to the power -1 (minus power~ to know within, 1~self). If you know yourself fully, you can divide yourself from 'one'... and you can do this eternally and get unique manifestations... that's fractals.

Then you get the style of Scientific philosophy, which can hardly be called "philosophy", its more like un-thinking: just square everything, multiply itself by itself, because you can do that without knowing what the original term even contains~ and you get inflation by conflation, more divisions of labeled objects, and a diffuse treatment of the subject: to the extent that the model doesn't even hold any truth "value", but its further helping to disguise this state of affairs, so much so, that Science is forced to denigrate the truth value of the 'subjective experience' entirely, or denigrate all of 'reality', or the human capability to grapple with their God, existing in the image, [of the external locus,] of Authoritative-Scientism. But of course, Science is considered to be the greater, because the quantity increase means a dependably crude form of "progress".... sure thing......... *sigh*

It violates the known laws of physics, so no.

Actually, taking a shortcut to the future is theoretically possible if you get close enough to light speed. Any time you go faster, you age slower, but it is only really noticeable once you pass 99% the speed of light.

Depends on what you mean by "time travel". If you take it to mean "is the perception of time relative" then yes, absolutely it's 'possible'. We know it happens, we have empirical proof. If we didn't take into account the differences in perception of time GPS would be inaccurate within a couple minutes; we calibrate the clocks to take into account the fact that time on GPS satellites moves 38 microseconds faster than time on Earth's surface over the course of a day.

Similarly, Russian cosmonaut Gennady Padalka is about 20 milliseconds 'younger' than he would have been if he hadn't spent almost three years of his life in orbit.

Ok so if we travel back in time, there must be a point where we didn't exist in the first place.. And also it goes against the basic laws of nature.. So no, eventhough I enjoy Back To The Future movies, but no way this is going to happen

It's interesting, when we enter a moderately deep trance, our perception of time disappears. So time disappears for me when I am entranced, but not for you when you are fully awake.

And our perception of time stretches out when we are doing something we don't like.

So even our perception of time is relative.
