I think that being an adult is an objective idea that many people try to grasp to no avail.

So what does it mean to the individual, and not the collective?

It means I have to deal with s@#t. Or not. It also means I can buy beer.

It basically means the person is free to do as they please and deal with the consequences I guess.

As I learned tonight in a rather embarrassing fashion, I guess being an adult to me means it's no longer considered cute and playful, when at the tender age of 26, still having your mother cut up your steak and serving it to you coupled with the theatrics of lip-derived airplane noises and whimsical hand motions.

Not to mention, I think after 9/11 the plane gestures may now be considered offensive to those with more delicate sensibilities.

Yes, I think they banned those airplane spoons afterwards because they thought it might be too traumatizing to people who watched it happen on TV.

Cupcakes are an improvement on muffins. Especially butterfly cupcakes.

I will not have you spreading falsehood and deception and causing disturbances! You must be punished for your indiscretion.

You are ordered to sit in the comfy chair:

Cupcakes are just an inferior rip-off of muffins anyway. They're a perversion of something holy and decent.

Muffins are for bourgeois old people who drink Sunny D out of a glass with their pinky extended.

Cupcakes are just the 80's glam metal Gen-X demographic re-branded version, now with "X-STREAM SPRINKLES!"

On the contrary. Muffins are just sad, boring, bald cupcakes.

Anyway, to answer the OP's question, I think being an adult means taking responsibility for one's life, making one's own choices, and holding oneself accountable for those choices. If a person can't handle that responsibility, then that person is still a child, no matter how old they are.

I admit it, I'm a bourgeois scum who lacks enough fear of the lumpenproletariat to ever be a true socialist revolutionary.

Oooh, you can totally go extreme and be all radical while being totally afraid to say or do anything that might make you look uncool! That's the best way to fight the power! :solidarity:

What many people (including my own parents) call "adult" makes me cringe. I'd rather die than grow up and be a responsible, hard-working, and dull person.

I guess my idea of an adult is someone who feels free to make his/her own decisions, and doesn't give in to what other people want for them.

This entire thread can best be summarized by this scene from a modern day classic.

Let's pack it in, boys -- Good job tonight, everyone.

Muffin vs cupcake debates are truly what it means to be an adult.

Cupcakes are so insecure they need to cover themselves up with glamour, while even the most average of muffins possesses an irresistible and seductive personality, able to please anyone who gives them a chance.

I think it means feeling responsible to take care of yourself and others, rather than the expectation to be taken care of by someone else. That is based on a child/parent dynamic, but applies whether or not you have children.

Finally, an adult response!

My rules are essentially that I do what I need to sustain myself and insure my independence, but everything else is up to me. Whether that fits someone else's definition is irrelevant; they aren't living my life, and it's not their call to make.
