Quality and Ressentiment

Quality is kinda odd. I know it when I see it. I know it when I feel it. For instance, The Leopard, by Guiseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa is a novel of the highest quality, yet when compelled to read, The Leopard, at school, the perception of quality disappears.

On the other hand, so many of us revel in the low, cheap and ugly. I think it is a passive form of aggression, particularly towards ourselves.

The low, cheap and ugly are a way of getting our revenge on the world. The low, cheap and ugly are an expression of ressentiment which is frustration and hostility which we are powerless to express to a hostile and indifferent world.

And being powerless to express our feeling, we dirty the world and ourselves with the low, cheap and ugly.

And being so powerless and so hostile we can only express our ressentiment in company. We seek to do it with others.

Some take our ressentiment to extremes with self harm such as cutting our selves with razor blades, see what you made me do, we unconsciously say.

And all the time, quality is all around us and that is what ressentiment hates most of all, ressentiment hates the ubiquity of quality and seeks to debase it.

I would rather have the low, cheap and ugly than enjoy the quality of the world, says ressentiment.

Different strokes......

This is called cultural relativism. And it is politically correct. Unfortunately it conflates the good with the bad, the exquisite with the vulgar, the beautiful with the ugly, and truth with falsehood.

Cultural relativism is the tool of ressentiment. It is the tool of those who wish to destroy, to damage, and deface. Imagine a boot grinding into the face of humanity forever, and we have cultural relativism.

Cultural relativism is clever because it is partially true. Different cultures do have different values. And so we might be PC and say how can we choose between different values? The answer is readily apparent as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights speaks to universal values, while the other systems are parochial.

You didn't explain which cultures you were talking about or in what context, or even cultures at all. You made general statements about quality and what is low, cheap and ugly.

This is called an opinion.....hence different strokes. It has nothing to do with being politically correct and everything to do with context and definition.

And if anyone disagreed with your agreed-upon universal standard of moral ethics, naturally you'd stop your boot into the ground against them to make them comply.

Which violates the first, most universal law of ethics and behavior: Do not interfere.

We arrived at the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by interferring with the SS Death Head Cult. And today we defend the Declaration of Human Rights by interferring with the Death Cult of Islam.

As I write brave Australians are fighting the Islamic Death Cult in Iraq and Syria, and at home our Intelligence and Police are fighting the Islamic Death Cult on the ground.

I hope Australians, and good people the world over, continue to fight violence and hatred wherever and in whatever guise they rear their head, without regard to ideology or propaganda.

Good heavens, violence and hatred and death cults are based on totalitarian ideologies.

For instance, the SS Death Head Cult was based on the totalitarian ideology of German National Socialism. And Communism was the totalitarian ideology of death States like Russia, China and Cambodia. And today the Islamic Death Cult is based on totalitarian Islam.

All totalitarian ideologies are the enemy of liberal democracy.

And centuries ago, the Inquisition was the death cult based on Christianity, specifically the Catholic church. We have also had "death cults", if you want to use that terminology, based on ethnic rivalies, colonial oppression, and misguided notions of racial superiority. None of it is justified, and all should be fought by decent folks the world over.

All totalitarian ideologies are the enemy of liberal democracy.
Absolutely, especially where implemented.

And that's not highly emotive language reminiscent of propaganda at all..... I've been reading your posts for a while and hate to say it, but the language used and sentiments expressed read like extreme patriotism.

Revenge against our future selves. You can enjoy it now, but it will take away from who you are. Not my problem, I'll leave it for future me to deal with. Short-sighted hedonism.

But is it really even more enjoyable, or is it just easier? But I guess effort always implies enjoyment in the future*, even if it's the very near future, so we just follow the path of least-resistance.

*or is effort enjoyable in itself?

I confess: I am an Australian patriot, but worse, I am loyal to Western Civilization.

But why am an Australian patriot and loyal to Western Civilization?

And the answer is that Australia, as part of Western Civilization, is my home. And I am at home in Australia and Western Civilization.
