"The highest activity a human being can attain is learning for understanding, because to understand is to be free." Baruch Spinoza (Ethics)

Wow, I love this quote and agree totally.

What is seen as good within the context of our society is the "holy fool," like Forrest Gump. People who ask too many questions or have confidence in their own knowledge are seen as egotistical, snobby and arrogant. I could live with that, but not when there are bigger problems. People claim to care about certain problems, but they don't like when other people make them feel insecure about their lack of knowledge or understanding of said problems. They prefer their own mental framework, and will often go to extreme lengths to protect it.

I can agree with that.

Although some kind of longing for simplicity is there inside us (and I think it may be a charm of Forrest Gump ). To have a simpler life, closer to essence of existence, not have great expectations, live from day to day. Many philosophers thought this way. But it’s a casual thought. There is an abyss between simple wisdom and foolishness.

I think I’m on the dark side- I liked Forrest Gump;)

I'd respond to you with discussions about philosophy, but it would just consist of fluff posts.

Transcendence (Selfhood) is freedom of mind and it is achieved through understanding (to perceive the meaning of).

But recently I heard a guy say that learning skills was the key to freedom: Fix your own car, build your own outhouse, things like that.

Meaning is found in the many ways we make use of the world.

Could Spinoza build his own dwelling or shoe his own horse? These problems - finding housing, transportation, a job - exist in the real world, they aren't just meanings in the mind.
