here's a question for Victor msg_v2: what if we had a tyrant that provided the full scope of liberal values and liberterian notions? in effect, a minimalist, non-democratically elected tyrant that took nearly no taxes and did nothing but police and protect the people & their property from violence & theft (from outside & inside).

who would have more freedom? the people under a modern democracy or the people under the liberal tyrant?

The people under a modern democracy with progressive taxation have more freedom than under a libertarian tyrant with no taxation.

But we only have to remember that freedom means the limitation of power to answer the question. And of course that also means limiting the power of money.

but the people under a modern democracy with progressive taxation have the ability to contribute money to a politician's campaign in exchange for favors & legislation, which the politicians have to take as much as they can in order to get elected. the tyrant has no need for campaign funds. so wouldn't money under the tyrants regime have less power?

Enlightenment? I don't think it's an on/off switch, if that's what you're asking.

If you stand under a lit bulb, eating a York Peppermint Paddy... you have a mint in the light, so you have "in-light-mint"=enlightenmint

Some things are just so overcomplicated.

The solution is simple: a political party is paid from consolidated revenue a certain amount per vote achieved. So money is largely taken out of the equation and we have a level playing field.

Enlightenment is pretty much an expansion of perspective, an inner illumination. It may or may not be achieved through mystical means, but it's largely how we're seeing things.

The Eupean Enlightenment of the 17th and 18th Centuries is founded in evidence and reason, leading to freedom and equality.

Whereas religious enlightenment is based on myth, superstition and group delusion, and led to slavey, misogyny and child abuse.
