This is strikingly true.

And this is because the mystic claims a spiritual authority that is separate from the institutional authority of religion.

So the religious authority has tried to tame and control the mystic authority, and where this failed, they persecute the mystic.

To put it cynically, mysticism is not a wise career choice within religion.
