Yes, if we don't know what a metaphor is we need to build a bridge to reach the metaphor. And interestingly we use a metaphor to build a bridge to reach the metaphor. So we say, "A metaphor is a bridge or a bridge is a metaphor". We all know what a bridge is and so we carry that forward to understand the metaphor on the other side.

Of course, you are right, and some of us baulk at crossing the bridge, like a skittish pony. And those of us who baulk are called 'fundamentalists' and we prefer the literal interpretation rather than the metaphoric interpretation.
