but i thoroughly enjoy myself while watching jersey shore and listening to radio rap. and they aren't guilty pleasures because i'm not guilty :).

Now see, I do enjoy to listening to a good bit of mainstream music, but I f*cking HATE when people think I am pathetic because of that. I've chosen not to share my true music interests with anyone who isn't a close friend, and even then, it's iffy. My music taste is one of the things I'm most self-conscious about. I admit, sometimes when someone asks me what I like to listen to, I lie. :(

2) people pleasing is doing something with the purpose of gaining the adoration, attention or acceptance of those around you. people pleasing is for weak, insecure parasites who need others to validate their pathetic existance

...True, though.

Do you think I need to make another thread focused less on aesthetics and more on whether consuming mainstream stuff is detrimental to the advancement of society or whatnot? Looks like this one's derailed beyond repair...

I can tell you that too much of anything can start to drive me crazy, whether it's listening to Tori Amos on repeat or Frank Sinatra or Fur Elise or 80's pop or Avril Lavigne. I can't stand to listen to the same thing over and over (though I have my favorites that I will listen to on repeat when I get in the mood) which is why I listen to so many different kinds of bands from the past 100 years or so. I have to switch it up. If I listened to 90's alternative for weeks on end I'd be just as ready to kill someone as I would be if I listened to 00's pop for the same length of time.

Maybe not weeks at a time, but I like to listen to a song for hours, even days at a time.

I observed the same for liberals, you know. Except for the gender thing, and the main raison I think, is that liberalism appeals to emotion and compassion before reason and intelectual rigor, while with libertarianism, it's the contrary.

But I'm liberal libertarian... (but liberal as in moderately left-wing)

Libertarianism doesn't appeal to intellectual rigor, it appeals to overly fanciful self-absorption. "Whheeee! Yes! I am one of the superior ones! I will never get sick, grow old, or have bad luck! Not me! It won't affect me!"

What? I'm certainly not like that.

Oh you're a libertarian socialist/anarchist kind of person...that's totally different than being an anarcho-capitalist libertarian, which is what I was describing. I will be more specific from now on.

This is starting to remind me of the 80's series "Family Ties" where Republican Alex P. Keaton rebelled against his aging hippie parents.

You only thought of that now?

A new criteria for the every expanding definition of progressive, perhaps?

Doesn't like Ace of Bass = progressive.

Indeed, to live in France is excellent to see the nefast nature of a socialist system. Move to US with very little money is part of my projects. And french people are freaked out by USA when they don't realize the situation of their own country. France is just an URSS who has'nt collapsed yet.

You really don't help yourself with statements like that. In fact, you hurt yourself. That assertion is very serious in its implications yet virtually impossible to defend; the worst kind of assertion to make. I don't know what you intend to accomplish when you say that, but I think you mainly make yourself look ignorant. Like, I'm pretty sure you have no clue what the USSR was like OR you suffer from delusions about what's going on in your country.

I usually state what music I like. But still, if my people decide to listen to auto-tune/rap/hip-hop/etc or some artists that I don't like, I won't tell them to change. Sometimes, music like LMFAO is just the right type of music for the atmosphere. Actually, I love the LMFAO. Quite frankly, it doesn't seem right to be listening to opera while you are having a good time with people... unless you are eating at some fancy dinner or something.

Mainstream =/= bad.

Context of the situation whether it is bad or not.

I honestly have a hard time sitting too long in a room with music that I absolutely hate. Like it really starts to bother me. Of course, there seems to be a time and a place for different kinds of music, and I like different kinds. Country/Western is fun if you're at a restaurant or bar that is themed that way, and rap and hip-hop sound really good to me sometimes coming out of people's cars when I'm walking on the sidewalk in the city, like it's just energetic and stuff. Sometimes - depends on what it is.

I never have lied about what music I like, but I used to hide the fact that I loved 70's soft rock soooo much (I mean, I really really LOVE IT) even though like Classic Rock or Southern Rock from the 70's is far more "socially acceptable" with most young people, the only other person my age I know who loves specifically some of the soft rock, too, like I do is my ExFP sister...she and I both share a not-so-secret affinity for girly pop sometimes too. I don't listen to it very often, but sometimes I'm just in the mood to hear Avril Lavigne, and that's that. I used to just not tell people and listen to it when I was by myself, because I love such a wide variety of music that I can relate to many different musical tastes when I'm around different people.

I can't take it - worse than fingernails on a blackboard. No matter what else is going on it just starts to take over my mind and I eventually have to leave.

I have changed other people's radios before. I'm just like...no.

I worked in this office once where these ladies listened to country all day long. I'm talking like that new country shit, on a radio station, not selectively on CDs. I like some old country a lot, and I selectively like particularly great artists (Clint Black, Dolly Parton, Keith Whitley, Hank Williams Jr., Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, Merle Haggard...you get the picture) but this was that country that sounds like watered down pop, and it was a placement at school while I was in college, and the job itself was pretty boring ...and I just quit. I couldn't take it.

I hitch a car ride with someone to work. She has no obligation to take me. She plays music in car that I usually hate, with only very rare exception. She also likes to sing along to it.

Because it is her car and she has not obligation to give me a ride, I have never complained about it.

It has made me sometimes consider all the extra effort of not riding with her to work.

I have a limited tolerence for C&W in the best of times (exception: Johnny Cash) and bad country is like bad Chinese food - its REALLY bad. I would have done the same - quit or possibly taken a baseball bat to the offending radios. Ear buds are my salvation - both because I can use them and other people often do as well.

Lol, just as long as I am not listening to the rap music like whoever that artist is that started rapping to that ice cream truck beat... those types of music give me headaches... or it makes me want to bust up the metal or hard-rock for the hell of it, and I don't always listen to metal.... For me, it is more like.... learn to rap like Jaz-Z/Fort Minor... or go home.

This is true. Depending on the circumstances, I've been extremely irritated even by music that I typically enjoy. For instance, there's this cafe that I used to frequent to do my papers and read (it was unfortunately hipster-ish - but I forgave it because beer was sold and the teas were good), and I'd want to kill someone every time Thom Yorke's bitch ass voice started littering my ears...which was just about every five seconds at that place. And I like Radiohead! Just not when I'm trying to fucking work. If Thom Yorke had strolled his ugly ass into the cafe at that moment I think I might honestly have assaulted him.

Actually, the assertion is not from me, but from socialists who took pride in the 70s that "France was an efficient USSR". Then the system shown gradually his failures through the decades, and libertarians took the socialist's assertion -not seriously but ironically and sardonically- to answer that France was simply an "USSR who has'nt collapsed yet", and not an efficient USSR. If France is not as rude as the true USSR, it's due to the rest of social and economic freedom in this country, not to socialism. Actually, pointing that the true USSR was more rude, you show than even more socialism make things even worse, and actually make my point.

That's what socialists, original authors of the comparaison between USSR and France did'nt understand. They did'nt realized that the immense amount of wealth available for the french welfare state was not an accident but due to the relative persitence of capitalism and economic freedom in this country. Socialism does'nt create any wealth and to distribute wealth, you must create it before. A basic truth that socialist always forget. Of course, the weight of the sate in the 70s was nothing compared to what it is currently. No wonder that the economy was more prosperous then.
