Justice is when everyone plays by the same rules and gets different results.

Fairness is when everyone plays by different rules and gets the same results.

Justice is a process. Fairness is an outcome.

The words are ambiguous. Sometimes "fairness" means justice, and other times it means equality. A "fair fight" is a fight where fighters play by the same rules, and so that would be like a "just fight." People use these terms to mean different things in different contexts. In any case, whatever words used, the important distinction is between processes and outcomes.

I wonder what function that's intended to uncover? I've been thinking about it and I have no idea which one I think is more important. I think both are extremely important, and when they conflict it depends on the situation which one is best....

Assuming a democratic system:

Justice and fairness are both constructs of the same society. Fairness is fluid. Justice is more rigid.

When they collide, the construct of Justice can be altered by a vote of majority. Fairness on a democratic scale will always prevail over justice because of this.

If properly maintained, Justice is therefor an extension of fairness.
