Its an assessment which in theory we make all the time, ie smoking could take years of your life but you might enjoy smoking, what is your view and have you ever had to make a difficult choices which boiled down to this dilemma? Do you think the difficulty of the decision makes the dilemma more complex?

I want a long life because I want to outlive the people I know now. It's sort of a childish contest, but I expect outlasting them to give me a sense of victory. I also want to see more of history before I die.

To die in happiness, however achieved, without pain or sorrow cannot be beaten by a long or 'good' life (whatever that means) if it ends in suffering. In terms of elegance, I think, the point outdoes all the shapes that could be drawn by it: to cease at birth in a tremendous orgasm or never to be born.
