I remember reading in Anthony Beevor's book about the Spanish Civil War that one of the commentaries on the war talked about the Fascists protected with all their might the churches and shrines and sites of historic interest while the commies protected the hospitals, schools and libraries.

Does anyone else think that culturally the developed world is closer today to the position of the commies in that conflict than it ever was before?
