The creators of godhatesfags.com. The church that pickets at the funerals of dead soldiers with signs saying "Thank God for IEDs."

Anyways, I have called their church and talked to a couple of members. 20 to 30 minute longs convos. Just asking questions and them trying their best to fit their twisted ideology to fit with the bible. It's insane stuff. Watch these movies...

That sounds creepy. Going around saying you should hate people is a little unusual. People hate enough without having it condoned/sanctioned by religion. Whether you believe homosexuality is wrong or not, hate is certainly wrong and sinful, even towards those you believe to be sinners. Two wrongs don't make a right. I could easily cite the story of Mary Magdalen as example of this. (Of course, I don't actively follow a religion.)

My thoughts on this? I'll just quote Q, "So typical. Savage lifeforms never follow even their own rules." That's one thing he said that makes sense to me.

I don't follow a religion either, but when I was on the phone I brought up this verse:
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Philippians 4:8

I asked her how she justifies all the time they put in to address the things opposite of these traits. She didn't have a good answer for me. She stumbled around with the question but her answer made no sense whatsoever. She gave up on it sort of frustrated and was like "do you have another question?"

That's frightening. I would figure by now they would have been confronted with those verses (and similar things) so much they would have developed some pat answers.

So not only are they mean-spirited, but they're also illogical/dull-witted.

I am impressed you called them on the phone. I hate doing things like that, it'd make my skin crawl because it's so directly confrontational (for me).

They're fucking creepy and if they ever went to one of my friends funerals I'm afraid I'd end up arrested for assault! Do they forget the whole thing about "judge not, lest you be judged"?

Good news though! Westboro Baptist Church was sued by the family of someone who's funeral they picketed and were found guilty!

They most certainly have been. They get things thrown at them from passing cars and people all the time. I recall one video they were pretty much up against a mob. They had to be escorted out of the area in a van by police, and someone ended up smashing open one of the windows.

And this is what keeps them going back. They thrive on the rush. It's disgusting.

They even picketed the Sago miner's funerals. Disgusting. Well, all except Jr. Toler's funeral, that is. They decided to move his funeral here to the National Guard Armory instead of the local church and the bunch couldn't get near him. Guarded by soldiers, police and everything. Nice.

Yup, that is the problem with religious extremists -- any negative reactions are just viewed as "persecution suffered as martyrs in the name of God."

You can't win. No matter what you do (short of permanently locking them up), it feeds the neurosis.

Yep. I have nothing but deep respect for people of faith that are good people (my family being an example), but it should also be said that religion is a cancer. Look around the world. Religion kills. :doh:

On a slightly random note, a member of an Australian comedy team called The Chaser did 'interview' one of their members in 2006 (you should've seen how they reacted when he started feigning homosexuality toward the bloke he was interviewing, who - I believe - was related to Phelps himself). As for the religion itself, it seems - to my Catholic eyes - to be founded on doctrines of hatred and prejudice. In other words, exactly what God punishes in The Bible, particularly during the Old Testament.
