How do we gain power over death?...

The answer to this question is easy:

(1) Live a life worth remembering.

(2) Reproduce so that your progeny have an opportunity to exert the talents of your genes in their own capacity in the world that exists after you are gone.

(3) Teach your own and those that you meet along the way your wisdom for they will pass it on long after you are gone.

The love in your heart is the only thing in this world that does not diminish as you give it.

I believe people fear death due to the physical actions that come before it. Basically no one really fears being dead. Logically speaking we would have no consciousness to know if it sucked or not.

Wrong; I fear (theoretical) oblivion for what it is. The fear comes from the extreme limitation of possibility and hope that oblivion represents, and the effects of such limitations/despair on life here on earth.
