What do you think of the concept of being amoral, as discussed in Camus?

Camus himself was a successfully moral man.

He knew that the moral man couldn't have his cake and eat it too. And better than that, Camus put his morality into practice and so earned our love.

While, in contrast, Sartre was a successful immoral man. Sartre was immoral in the larger sphere of politics and to cap it off, he was immoral in his private life as well. And he was aided and abetted by Simone de Beauvoir.

The Existentialism of Sartre came as a result of the destruction of Europe in WW II. There seemed to be nothing left but existence - no beliefs, no hopes, no fears and no emotions.

Camus tried to express this in literature.

In my opinion, Camus was not a great litterateur but he kept the fire of morality burning, particularly in opposition to Sartre and his perverse and pedestrian Existentialism.

Camus will always be remembered with affection.

About defining the terms:
A Moral person consciously makes an effort to stay on the good end of the morality spectrum.
An Immoral person understands that their actions are on the immoral end of the spectrum and doesn't care.
An Amoral person doesn't see the validity of the moral spectrum and therefore ignores it.

Morality is the way we treat one another.

But when the other becomes a burden, we are tempted to let them go.

And to do this we need to convince ourselves that right is wrong and wrong is right.

This is surprisingly easy to do.

That [aided and abetted] is such a cool phrase!

It's the alliteration - the 'a' at the beginning, and the 'd' at the end - it's got you coming and going. And then there's the 'd' and the 'b' in the middle - almost alliterative themselves. It's alliteration dancing with alliteration.

It is hypnotic with all the weight of usage behind it.

But most of all is its implication of criminality - it's a pejorative phrase that enables us to hold our nose as we lock the cell door.
