The Four Temperaments Test {Free Quiz} ⋆ LonerWolf
Phlegmatic
Photo ArtistResult Image
Phlegmatics are the quietest and most relaxed of all the temperaments.

When it comes down to it, phlegmatics are happy with how things are. They lack the ambition to strive for change, because in fact, they hate change as they feel it creates unnecessary problems. This often makes them appear sluggish and lazy, yet they are extremely patient. The phlegmatic's care-free nature, along with their dislike of change, makes them easy-going, consistent, laid-back, meek, and unexcitable. In essence, they desire a quiet and peaceful environment above all else.

Also, they are very accommodating and tolerant of other people, actively going out of their way to avoid upsetting anyone. They despise conflict. Their accepting nature and willingness to please, makes the phlegmatic the most trustworthy and loyal friend. However, this constant agreeableness can be frustrating to some people, as it can be interpreted as indifference.

The phlegmatic's diplomatic eagerness to please people, stoic inexpressive demeanour and contempt towards decision-making, is often misunderstood for aloofness or lack of enthusiasm. However, phlegmatics are known as the "peaceful" type. They prefer to observe and to think on the world around them while not getting too involved. They may try to inspire other people to do the things which they wouldn't give a thought to doing. Unlike the Melancholic temperament, the introverted phlegmatic is people-oriented, always seeking to put others above themselves.

Famous Phlegmatics: Calvin Coolidge, Tim Duncan, Sandy Koufax, and Keanu Reeves.

Career Choices: Cooks, diplomats, administrators and office workers.

Planet: Moon.

Symbolic Animal: Golden retriever, Lamb.

Choleric
Photo sourceResult Image
Hardy, head-strong, and hot-headed, the Choleric person is born to instruct, lead and crusade for worthy causes. Rarely shy or timid in any aspect of their lives, the Choleric person is confident, competitive, and task-orientated. They are rarely "people persons" and can come across as being opinionated, brash and argumentative. Above all, the Choleric person values strength and courage; traits they perceive within themselves. Although the Choleric is a leader instead of a follower and very passionate and driven by nature, they tend to become aggressive when someone "steps on their toes" or crosses their path. Interpersonally, the Choleric person is prone to "say things as they are," and are bluntly honest in conversation, which can be refreshing. However, the biggest weakness of the Choleric is their craving to always "be on top" and their desire to "always be right." It's important for the Choleric to be an Alpha male or female, and they never like admitting defeat. To them defeat is a sign of failure and weakness, which they abhor. As friends, lovers and family members, the Choleric person will be there to "take a bullet" so to speak. They are not afraid of asserting themselves against bullies of any kind. In fact, the Choleric can out-bully the bully any day, and will not blink an eye at plotting their demise. Family-wise, the Choleric person shows their affection for loved ones by doing, and prefers to challenge rather than to emotionally support (e.g. think "interventions" and ultimatums). In essence, the Choleric is either your greatest ally, or worst enemy.

As a Choleric, you are:

Decisive and quick-thinking.
Hot-headed and aggressive.
Natural born leader.
Freethinking.
Task-orientated, rather than people-orientated.
Passionate and driven.
Self-confident and self-assured.
Controlling and domineering.
Pragmatic and efficient.
Stubborn and opinionated.
"Alpha" male or female.
Crafty.
Courageous and thick-skinned.
Famous Cholerics: Julius Caesar, Alexander the Great, St.Ignatius, Adolf Hitler, St. Paul, Bill Gates.

Career Choices: CEO, Strategic Analyst, Management roles, Advisory roles, Entrepreneurial roles, Director roles.

Melancholic

By nature, the melancholic temperament is idealistic, solitary, introspective, and sensitive.

Melancholics perceive the world with intensity, possessing high ideals and a constant inner turmoil that revolves around their ideals of perfection and the imperfect external world.

The melancholic's idealism causes them to be highly perfectionistic. They are known to excel in any creative field they embark in, due to a combination of their perfectionism and their heightened sensitivities to emotions and the subtleties of beauty. Their creative work is often hindered, however, by procrastination, as their desire for perfection paralyses them to start anything.

Often, the melancholic's perfectionism can result in social isolation. Holding themselves, and other people, to their unrealistically high standards makes them difficult to relate to, and also to please. It also makes them self-deprecating. Sometimes, for instance, they can think that they're not interesting enough, even if deep down they know that this isn't true. This is partly why the melancholic prefers spending time alone.

Perhaps the most introverted temperament of all four, melancholics are slow, cautious and reserved in how they approach life. They crave time alone and only associate themselves with a few people that share their standards and ideals.

Melancholics need alone time to brood and slowly think things through, as they never decide impulsively. Melancholics feel that this combination of slow introspection and deep sensitivity is what gives them great analytical abilities. Melancholics are often prone to reflecting on how they feel about different elements of life. Once they reach a conclusion, they can become quite stubborn-minded, as they feel they can't be wrong with such a carefully considered opinion.

The melancholic's sensitivity can be both a gift and a curse. On one hand, their sensitivity can make them very thoughtful and conscientious. They are naturally compassionate, considerate and self-sacrificing, always focusing on justice and goodness. On the other hand, the Melancholic can become frequently preoccupied with the tragedy and cruelty that happens around them. Occasionally they can fixate on tragic memories from their pasts, entering phases of depression and moodiness. Additionally, they can get hurt easily due to their perfectionistic ideals, especially when someone is critical of their work.

The melancholic rarely responds to things they dislike with rage, preferring a more passive emotional withdrawal such as misery or crying in solitude. Once a person the melancholic trusted loses their credibility, they can hold a grudge against them indefinitely. This is why they're often perceived as moody and hard to interact with, because they can get hurt so easily.

Famous Melancholic Temperaments: Ernest Hemingway, St. Francis, Van Gogh, Beethoven and St. Catherine of Siena.

Career Choices: Artist, Writer, Psychologist, Psychiatrist, Scientist, Mechanic, Engineer, Analyst.

Planet: Saturn.

Symbolic Animal: Beaver, Owl.

Sanguine

Fun-loving, friendly and fickle, the Sanguine temperament is optimistic and sociable by nature. Often the charismatic party animals and drama queens of society, the Sanguine person is a stimulation-seeker by nature, and lives for excitement, pleasure and fun. It's not hard to be friends with a Sanguine as they are sociable, easy-going and enthusiastic. For this reason, Sanguine's are never in need of friends: they already have massive social circles. The Sanguine's chatty disposition also means that they rarely spend time alone, and rarely stop to think things through. Thus, they tend to be impulsive, chaotic and unpredictable. They are rarely the people to arrive at meetings or appointments on time, or to remember responsibilities or duties. Nevertheless, the Sanguine person is rarely serious or aggressive. They are people-pleasers by nature, so naturally they enjoy keeping the peace and maintaining harmonious relationships. Although the Sanguine person is attention-seeking, untrustworthy and capricious, they are also full of energy, charisma and a great lust for life.
As a Sanguine, you are:
Sociable and charismatic.
Optimistic and bubbly.
Care-free and easy-going.
Disorganized and chaotic.
Stimulation-seeking and impulsive.
Emotionally demonstrative and "touchy feely."
Attention-seeking.
Popular (many friends and few enemies).
Energetic and supportive.
Famous Cholerics: Richard Simmons, Oprah Winfrey, Tony Robbins.
Career Choices: Singer, Dancer, Comedian, Motivational Speaker, Customer Service Representative, Social Worker, Bar Tender, Tourist Guide, Salesman/Saleswoman.

Some of this was surprisingly accurate. I knew Keanu Reeves and I had a special connection.

I, too, think I have a lot of Phlegmatic in myself. The biggest difference is that I prefer to be alone. So, I guess I'm Melancholic by default, but Phlegmatic when I have to interact with others...
