You have reached 75 of 100 points, (75%)

We all feel guilty from time to time and we all make mistakes that we often regret. Feeling guilt is a natural and healthy part of being a compassionate human being. But what happens when feelings like guilt, shame and remorse consume our lives on a very deep unconscious level?

If you received a score above 50% you most likely have a guilt complex. The higher your score is to 100, the more intense your guilt complex is.

But don’t worry. The more self-aware you are, the more you will be able to explore and counteract any ingrained ideas you have about yourself and life.

It would have been higher a year ago, so this is an improvement at least.

A guilt complex can be defined as a set of deeply held mistaken beliefs about who you are, what you have done and what you deserve. People with guilt complexes tend to hold themselves easily accountable for any wrongs they perceive have been committed and those with guilt complexes often have an extremely hard time forgiving themselves of their perceived faults, flaws and slip ups.
There are many reasons why we develop guilt complexes in life. Mostly the reasons are due to:
Religious influence, particularly when the religious beliefs involve sanctifying guilt and making it something desirable.
Family influence, e.g. you were constantly punished and guilt tripped as a child.
Traumatizing experience, e.g. you were blamed for the death of a loved one, or you made a severe mistake which cost many people.

In general, guilt complexes are a mixture of all the above elements.

It's the result of nurture. What I was raised in. Mostly. It's what tends to make me seem 9w1. And it's why I question.

YOU SCORED 70 - You Have a Guilt Complex

You received a score above 50 meaning that you most likely have a guilt complex.

What is a Guilt Complex?

Low self-esteem, or the belief that you aren’t worthy of happiness. Poor self-esteem contributes to blowing perceived failures out of proportion.
In general, guilt complexes are a mixture of all the above elements.

If you have a guilt complex, you will:

  • Constantly ruminate on what you did "wrong."
  • Constantly try to find ways to solve the mistakes you made in the past.
  • Easily accept blame and responsibility.
  • Be quick to apologize, i.e. you might say “sorry” a lot for no reason.
  • Find something to feel guilty about, even when it is not necessary, e.g. you will dig up some old shame from the past and dwell on it excessively.
  • Find ways to be unhappy because you believe, deep down, that you are not worthy of finding true happiness.
  • Feel as though you are fundamentally flawed.

Although it can be difficult to deal with a guilt complex, with consistent self-guided effort it is possible to free yourself of such a burden. Two of the best ways to heal this problem involve self-love and self-forgiveness. Once you realize that you are inherently worthy of feeling happiness – just as much as anyone else – and that the only way you can truly feel better is by forgiving yourself and embracing the person you are (good and bad), you will be able to expand beyond the prison of guilt.
