My impression of 3 was that it wasn't necessarily one of a focus on external image, but more about wanting achievement with image as a secondary factor. From that angle, it fits me very well.

But 1 fits me, too. The only reason why I didn't think that I was a 1 was that descriptions of 1 seem to imply wanting moral perfection and also expecting perfection in other people. I know that I expect it in myself, but by no means is it a moral crusade, and I do embrace the flaws of others. "I must be perfect and good to be happy" certainly resonates with me, though..

Not really a unique fault of the Enneagram. Some people have reported totally consistent Enneagram results, but constantly changing MBTI results. The consistency apparently depends on the person.

Wild guess, those who know how they operate better probably have more consistent MBTI results, and those who are more aware of what they want probably have more consistent Enneagram results.
